3 Ways to Stay Stylish when it’s Freakin’ Freezing Outside

I love when I come across those open-toe suede booties in stores in March and think what crazy person is itching for frost-bitten toes. Oh wait, that’s me.

When I moved to California in 2013, winter trends like open toe booties (which I thought seemed like an oxy-moron), off-the-shoulder sweaters, and short-sleeve coats all seemed very weird to me. If it’s hot enough to wear open toe shoes, why wear booties? If it’s cold enough to need a sweater, why keep your shoulders bare?  If you have to ruin your outfit with a coat, why cut the sleeves off?

That’s when I discovered warm winters and realized that it can be fun dressing for “winter” if you don’t actually have to worry about the cold.  But when you’re stuck in a locale where you can see your breath when you’re walking outside, you actually need to cover and zip shit up, if you know what I mean.

Faux fur coats are a staple for cold winters.  Being the wild fashionista I am, I chose one that’s pink. Hot pink. Bundling up on top makes it a bit easier to keep the legs bare in a skirt.

It took two minutes for me to whip this outfit together before heading out for brunch.  I paired a simple black leather skirt with a fun graphic tee, slipped into my sparkly pink sneakers, then threw on the pink fur coat with an obnoxiously large pair of gold earrings.

4 Unexpected Trending Colors for Spring

Spring is officially two weeks away! Naturally the best part about the changing seasons is the warmer weather approaching.  New seasons also bring a new color palette.

1. Pink

At the oscars we saw a couple stars wearing hot pink dresses. With the transition from winter to Spring we normally see a natural transition from bold hues to soft pastels, but this Spring looks like we’ll have our choice of fresh new bold hues that are still so fresh and feminine.

With this look I combined my oversized Nasty Gal sweater with my double brushed purple Lula Roe tights. For an evening out I threw on the jeweled headband to make the look a touch more whimsical and indie.

2. Red

That’s right, red is no longer just a holiday-inspired/Valentine’s Day Go-To. Your little red dress or coat can take you from winter to Spring and keep you totally in style.

3. Blue

I fell in love with Diane von Furstenberg at a young age.  There’s no wonder why; this DVF blue patterned dress is totally on trend for Spring and completely affordable.

4. Yellow

It’s not normally my favorite color, but when I see it wrapped up with pink in these adorable lemon sandals (that instantly make me crave a picnic!), I think that yellow can definitely be a great color to accent your wardrobe.

Three Winter Red Dresses Perfect for a Night Out

Express red dress

I spent many years avoiding red dresses believing that they didn’t flatter my skin tone and my auburn hair. It wasn’t until this season when I saw hundreds of red dresses that I just couldn’t resist. I loved this red dress from Express because it was elegant, sexy, and understated yet stylish. Midi dresses give you the comfort and sophistication you don’t get with mini dresses. The shoulder cut-outs make this dress perfect for date nights out on the town.

Although the Express dress is no longer for sale, here are a few others that are sexy, stylish, elegant, feminine, and totally chic.

Why the Grammy’s are just a Political Throwdown Now

Ten years ago I watched the Grammy’s to see my favorite bands perform, dance in my room, and cheer on my favorite musical artists.  This year I find myself watching the show to see who makes the biggest political statement…and yeah okay the live musical performances are nice too.

Political statement number one came from an American singer I had never heard of before, Joy Villa.  She wore a dress with a fetus in a womb on it and a handbag that said pro-life.  Props to you for using fashion to give you publicity but lets all agree, that if you’re pro-trump in Hollywood then you’re setting yourself up for bad publicity.

For those who are still focused on the fashion.  The best way to stun your audience is with a neutral gown.  For those who don’t have the budget of a celebrity, here are a few that are elegant, stunning, and affordable.BCBG gown

The Unexpected Coat you Need to Stand out This Winter

Everyone wears a black coat.  Whether it’s black down, black wool, or black leather, most of the population blend into the abyss with this solemn color.  For those who want to have one jacket that will go with everything so that they can wear it all winter, neutral colors are great, but it doesn’t have to be black.  Grey, beige, and white give you lighter and brighter ways to enhance your style without losing the convenience of a color that matches everything.

How to Play Up your Favorite Neutrals

Saks Fifth Avenue pants

Take a closer look at my other posts and you’ll probably see that I’m a huge fan of bright colors! Pinks, blues, purples, are always a crowd pleaser.  However, experimenting with different looks is what keeps my days fun as a stylist. A couple weeks ago I had a wonderful get together to celebrate a friend’s birthday.  I wanted something comfy, something cozy, and something mature.

Five Jumpsuits to Wear to a Professional Networking Event

Deciding what to wear to a networking event can be tough.  On one hand you want to look classy, you will be meeting a lot of new people that could potentially become your colleague or boss.  But on the other hand, you want to look stylish AF because you’re tired of looking frumpy at work after being up at 6am and running out the door without putting more than two seconds of thought into your ensemble.  This is the perfect opportunity to actually coordinate your outfit with your shoes, the bag, the jewelry, the whole nine yards. All of these jumpsuits would also be great for date night with your SO.

Winter Fashion Favorites That Won’t Cramp your Style

Women's BootiesAnyone else not happy about the cold wave sweeping across the nation? As a fashion enthusiast I refuse to compromise style for weather.  Yes, I might run the risk of frostbite more than other people but I figure if I plan my travel wisely, I can avoid outside exposure as much as possible.  However sometimes experiencing the cold is inevitable.  Luckily, there are several winter items that will keep you looking just as stylish as those upper east side New Yorkers while keeping you warm and cozy.

Juicy Couture

For years I refused to give in to the puffy Canada goose coat, you know the one that makes even those with the sexiest shapes look like marshmallows, but then I thought, screw it let’s be warm.  You can still stand out and look fashionable if you opt for a bold color like this bright electric blue.

Fur linings are the way to go when you want an extra layer of warmth.  The first time the snow hits, the jean jackets normally make their way to the back of my closet.  Find a jean jacket with an extra thick lining so you can keep your style consistent all year.

If you can’t escape the winter, embrace it.

The Dress Trend You Need this Fall

Women’s Dresses

Womens Fashion

The only good thing about the impending winter season, is the influx of sequin dresses in store. Three things remain constant in my life:

  1. I’m always in search for a pair of high heels to take my breath away.
  2. Wearing pink is like breathing for me.
  3. Anything that sparkles can put a smile on my face.

How to Get the Perfect Date Night Look

Date nights are the best night of the week. They’re the perfect excuse to pull out your new fall attire, gather up your fave accessories, and enjoy a night of looking ultra-chic.

My go-to style tip: combine casual with fancy for a wildly fantastic ensemble.

Here I combined my new fave Tobi skirt, with a fall suede crop top with fancy sneakers, a trendy leather cap from Go Jane and that sexy pout. I wore Clinique pink lipstick that is just the perfect combination of smooth matte and creamy.

With my hair blowing in the wind, I had to keep it nicely tucked behind my ears. I love having long hair, but those curls can get unruly in the wind!

striped skirt

The best thing about warm weather in the fall is wearing those crop tops with an open back. I’ll take advantage of summer attire for as long as possible. This navy and white skirt from Tobi matched perfectly with my Brandy Melville crop top. Unfortunately, they aren’t still selling this exact crop top, but here is a very similar one!

Pink Sweater

Ever wonder which pair of shoes to wear? As a woman who owns almost a hundred pairs of shoes, deciding which ones to wear is what takes up all my time getting ready.

This fall I’m obsessed with girly sweaters. This soft, light pink sweater from Tobi is so comfy, making it perfect for a stay-in date night or a date night on the town. There’s plenty of time to wear dark colors in the winter. While the sun is still shining and the weather is warm, I like to stick with light, feminine colors.

My Chanel sunglasses are the perfect accessory to make any casual look, a tad more sophisticated! No look is complete without the perfect bag. For day time dates with my man I like to wear a big purse to carry anything and everything I might need.

Tobi Sweaters

Before heading out to a romantic dinner spot, I switch the big bag for an evening clutch. This black suede Jimmy Choo clutch is my favorite new accessory! It looks great with anything! I can dress it down with this ultra-chic orchid Tobi sweater, or I can dress it up with a little black dress on the weekends.

The jeans are from Armani Exchange. They look great with bold sweaters. When wearing a sweater that has a color that pops, I like to combine it with neutral accessories: brown Chanel sunglasses, grey skinny jeans, a black bag, and black high heels!

Once you’ve bought the perfect look, all you need is a couple savory tapas and that pink martini to really make the night exciting!

5 Variations of a Button-Down that you’ve Got to Have

Button down shirts for women are great because they can be stylish and professional for work, and made casual and sexy for after work drinks at the bar with friends. This season we’re seeing a new take on button down shirts. We’ve gone beyond stripes, plaid, polka dots, and solid colors to shirts with more structure, more detail, and more feminine touches.

The #1 Thing People Say you Can’t Wear after Labor Day – But, you Totally Can

White – There’s a great myth that fall time means dark colors, rich hues, and heavier fabrics.  Living on the West Coast taught me that obeying seasonal fashion rules is as extinct as listening to CD’s.  Some people say that white shirts are always acceptable, but white bottoms are not.  I spent many years packing away my white jeans and white skirts every September, and then pulling them back out again every May.

The best way to make a white outfit fit for Fall is to add Fall accessories like a pair of high heel booties or a knitted beanie.

The only fashion guide you should follow is the weather.  If it’s warm and sunny, wear sandals and tanks, if it’s cool and cloudy wear sweaters and booties. There are no go-to seasonal rules to follow anymore, the fashion game is a lot less judgmental.

Check out below for a list of hot white skirts to wear this Fall:

Three Fall Sweater Looks that don’t Suck

Buy above pictured sweater here: Forever 21

Despite a drop in temperature, there’s no need for a drop in style every Fall.  Unless you’ve been relishing in the West Coast heat wave that struck last weekend, you’re probably preparing yourself for sweater weather and high heel booties.

While you’re recovering from the loss of your bikini and shorts days, the best cure is finding the perfect fall look.  I like to pair boring sweaters with sexy skirts, high heels, and a statement bag. (Note: On my really adventurous days I rock a pink vacuum just because I can.)

If you’re looking for something a bit more chill, (not everyone can rock a 3 in 1 Bissell), experiment with colorful leggings.  When you’re soul is saddened by the lack of sun, bring that cheerful color into your outfit instead! Take advantage of your highest high heel booties before the snow arrives.

When you’re transitioning between summer and fall weather, take advantage of those days that are in between.  Pairing a warm sweater with shorts and booties might seem like an unusual combo, but if you keep your upper body warm, that’s all you’ll need to pull off this fun, fashion-forward look!

The fall time is notoriously busy! Throwing on a basic sweater and jeans takes two seconds or less.  But to make that quick and easy look, pair it with your favorite accessories!  Go nuts, wear those high heels that make you feel like Elle Woods circa 2001 and wear that chunky bag that screams fall fab!

There are a few major sweater trends to watch for this Fall.  V-necks, cut-outs, and choker sweaters are still all the rage.  If you can get your hands on one that’s soft and silky, sexy, and warm, don’t let it go!

The Fall Stay-Cation you Need in your Life

It’s the weekend after labor day and it’s becoming harder and harder to feel those Summer vibes.  Bikini season is replaced by fall sweaters and booties.  Vacation season slowly comes to a close, and fun weekends become more about chilling indoors with a good book and a glass of wine.

So how do you make the transition to Fall as fun as possible?  You host the ultimate stay-cation! That’s right, it’s a vacation in your home, and it’s personalized to your specific tastes.  What could be better?

It starts with the most luxurious bedding from Crane & Canopy.  You don’t need a hotel bed to have a luxurious sleep, but a soft duvet and sheets, and a few extra pillows will definitely help!

Photos Courtesy of Crane & Canopy

A few extra decorative pillows are perfect for propping you up so you can sit up and have breakfast in bed (don’t forget the mimosas!) or catch up on reading your favorite novels.Ambiance is always important.  Treat yourself to amazing home decor.  Even if you’re not an interior designer, there are so many ways to become inspired and find the perfect decor to suit your taste! It only takes a few minutes on Pinterest to find all the color and style inspiration you could ever want!

We all have a list of activities we love to do when we’re not at work or doing one of the million responsibilities that we have on our plate at any given time.  Stay-cations are for forgetting those everyday responsibilities and taking the time to relax, have a bath, and pamper yourself within the confines of your lavish home decor.

At the end of the day you can curl up by a fire, order in your favorite meal, and stay cozy and warm underneath a soft knit throw.

When Monday arrives and people ask you about your weekend you can say you had the best vacation – a stay-cation! And you didn’t even have to leave your home!

The Must-Have Fashion Item of the Summer

No, the must have fashion item of the summer is NOT a pink motorcycle.  I however felt the need to pose with this one because it made my inner spirit animal truly happy.  Once again, this is proof that dreams really do come true when you’re walking the streets of San Francisco.

The must have fashion item of this summer is – drum roll please – the white miniskirt!  It may not be the most practical item in your closet but it is your most show-stopping piece for summer and I’ll tell you why!

1 – It goes with everything

Wear it with your favorite bold color top like hot pink or bright blue.

2 – You can achieve a “sophisticated sexy” look with a monochromatic outfit

Wear it with a black top and keep things simple and classic.

3 – White skirts show off your confidence

White skirts aren’t the most forgiving item in your closet.  Black is often considered the edgier color, like when you wear a black leather jacket. But to be honest, only true badasses can pull off white!

4 – White screams “SUMMER VACAY”

No beach vacation is complete without some white attire.  White skirts work great as bathing suit coverups.

One last piece of advice: be sure to find a white skirt that isn’t see-through! That’s half the battle. Opt for thicker fabrics, or ones that have linings.

The Top Two Michelin Star Restaurants in San Francisco

On a quest to try every Michelin star restaurant in San Francisco, I’ve yet to be disappointed by one.  You’d think it would be hard to distinguish a favorite amongst so many that are – let’s just say it – MINDBLOWING, but there were two that brought dining out to a whole new level of succulence.

Just South of Market Street inside a huge historic building lies a Moroccan restaurant called Mourad.  It might be easy to miss their small sign, but when you walk through those glass doors you’ll instantly feel lavish like your country club friends who grew up in Newport Beach.

After being to several high end restaurants in San Francisco that serve tiny portions almost too beautiful to eat in a setting similar to a barn or cabin, I slowly learned that dressing up for a fine dining experience isn’t always necessary.

Unfortunately, I wore a jean jacket to Mourad and discovered that it might be one of the last few restaurants in SF where people actually dress to impress.  Just when I was getting used to eating expensive food on cheap plates, going from the gym to dinner with wet hair and no makeup West Coast style, I discovered a place that brought back all the nostalgia from growing up on the East Coast.  This is definitely a place to wear your high heels that are strictly meant for sitting. Luckily, this place is located downtown away from the steep hills.

Now back to the food – we began by splitting two appetizers: fennel salmon and octopus with brussel sprouts and cauliflower.  This is when the war for the last brussel sprout began.  Sharing is caring but when it comes to the most perfectly fried brussel sprouts, your porcelain plate becomes the new battlefield.  You’d have to taste it to understand it.

Every bite was exceptionally flavorful.  If we had been in a barn setting like the other places, I may have actually licked the plate clean.

For the main meal, I debated hardcore between scallops with yam and quinoa or lamb with lentils.  I ended up getting the scallops, my friend got the lamb.  The scallops were the best I’ve ever had; the texture was perfectly soft and buttery and they were bursting with flavor.  While I didn’t try the lamb, I can only say that if they tasted as good as they looked – so perfectly pink and decorated with edible flowers – they would be a staple to order at this Moroccan restaurant.

Gary Danko

From the moment you walk through the doors to the moment you take that last sensational bite, all your needs will be taken care of like you are the Queen of England and the world’s peace is dependent on you enjoying your meal.

Whether you’ve got personal chefs preparing you lavish mimosa brunches every weekend, or you’re just a young adult celebrating a milestone, everyone comes together at Gary Danko for the most mouthwatering food and the most impeccable service.  Seriously, spill a crumb and set your timer to see how long it takes someone to come wipe it up…probably 30 seconds.  And if you’re not used to being catered to, honestly it made me a little nervous because they were almost too thorough, it may seem a bit unsettling.

The best way to enjoy the lavish experience of Gary Danko is with your family, best friends, or significant other. Conversations start out steady and diverse and soon converge into proclamations from everyone about the perfection of the food.  Suddenly, you realize that you’ve never had a good meal in your life, and you may never again be able to enjoy the canned salmon and bagged salad you had the previous night for dinner.

Before you’re sent off back into reality, they give you a going away present: the most incredibly moist muffin so that when you wake up the next morning and you’re staring into your bowl of cheerios and milk, you can know that a better choice exists and the divine experience you had last night doesn’t have to end just yet.

So do your foodie-self a favor and treat your tastebuds to Mourad and Gary Danko.  Hopefully you’ll walk away with not only a full tummy, but also plenty of pictures and a newfound appreciation for the talented chefs in San Francisco who bring these jaw-dropping dining experiences to fruition.

Five Ways to Wear Plaid this Summer

Gone are the days when plaid was just for farmers and lumberjacks.  Plaid is one of those styles that is never in or out, it’s just always there, like a major food group but in the style world.

In the summer I wear plaid as a swimsuit cover up whether I’m sitting by the pool or cruising on a boat.

Nordstrom Rack

Plaid dresses are a great daytime go-to whether you’re running errands or going to a party.

Button down plaid shirts are a common wardrobe staple for both men and women!

If you’re ready to get really crazy and dive back into the hippy 70’s, maybe you’ll try a pair of flare plaid pants.  They’re definitely a head turner on their own, so I’d stick with a pretty basic top to match with it.

Three Ways to Wear Summer Grunge

My summer style is often defined by whatever’s easiest to throw on and cover up as little of my body as possible.  Crop tops, off-the-shoulder tops, and cut-out tops make any look a bit grungier.

While I wouldn’t call myself a huge baseball fan, baseball caps are my summer go-to when I’m trying to hide from the sun.  If you’re like me and not one of those lucky people who tan well, baseball caps should be the base point of any look you create.

Wearing jewelry in the summer is great because it’s less likely to be hidden behind your long sleeve tops and sweaters.  Short shorts are never a bad idea on the weekends.  Jean shorts are one of the most versatile summer items you could own.  For an extra grungy look, find a pair with rips and roughly cut edges.

Your Guide to Buying the Funkiest Sunglasses this Summer

I’m not a fan of mirror selfies, but lets blame this one on a whole lot of bottomless mimosas.

Because seriously, Ray-Ban wayfarers isn’t the only option out there!  Switch it up a bit this Summer!

Get the Modern Version of Julia Robert’s Look from Pretty Woman

Twenty-seven years later and the fashion in Pretty Woman is still relevant.  That movie made an impact on us in more ways than one, including it’s fashion.

Don’t forget her incredible stripper boots! These boots definitely made an impression on me, and since then I’ve always been searching for the perfect pair.  To be honest, my perfect pair of thigh high patent boots would be hot pink, but you definitely can’t go wrong with these classic black ones.

Her transformation from a Hollywood Blvd lady to a Rodeo Dr classy lady is mesmerizing.  Shop the white dress here.

Three Fashion Staples for a Successful Night Out

As my closet contents continue to grow, I sometimes find myself getting lost in a sea of frilly tops, black dresses, sparkly jewelry, and backless tops.  Having options is great, but there are three fashion staples that can make putting together an evening look quick and simple, and best of all, successful.

  1. My basic black cotton bodycon dress from Forever 21 is my go-to dress when I want to start with a classic and sexy base before bedazzling up my look.  It’s great for layering, and unlike many of my other dresses, it’s long enough to keep my backside covered while dancing all hours of the night!

2. This trendy sheer peach off-the-shoulder top may not stay off the shoulder as much as I’d like it, but it’s still my go-to when I’m trying to add a feminine chic touch to any look!

3. Lastly, silver hoop earrings, especially the obnoxiously large ones that I’m wearing, are a great way to spice up any going out look without being weighed down in pounds of rhinestones or chunky jewelry.  I got these lightweight hoop earrings from Bloomingdales.

If you’re perceptive, you may have picked up on something on my teeth in these pictures.  I like to use white strips before going out.  They help keep my teeth freshly white and sparkly so I can smile until my heart’s content and counteract the evil stains of red wine.  For reference, I use 3D Crest Whitestrips LUXE Professional Effects, and I find they do a great job!

Funny T-shirts you Need in your Closet Right Now

TGIF shirts are so out.  We need wackier words to keep our increasingly more distracted audiences entertained. Although our clothing gives us a way to express ourselves more symbolically, sometimes we actually have to spell it out.  Most of us aren’t open books, but that doesn’t mean we can’t wear our thoughts on our sleeves every once in a while.

For the other shoe-a-holics out there…

This shirt spoke to me.  I’ve had many shoe flings.  And man oh man have I made my way through a shoe store a time or two.

Cold weather affects us all differently.  Personally, it brings out my inner polar bear and that’s when I hibernate.  Sometimes we say stuff we don’t mean when the wind chill is below -30C and there’s snow in our boots, yeah we all know the feeling.

For the pet lovers…

a.k.a. for anyone who has a soul, doggies always come first.  Let’s get our priorities in line.

It’s no secret that coffee is a great brain booster.  It would certainly be depressing to run out of that good stuff.

Tips to Avoid Wardrobe Malfunctions While Wearing Low-Cut Tops

One of the problems women face when getting dressed to go out is the dreaded nip slip wardrobe malfunction.  We’ve all been there.  We notoriously fall in love with the attractive low cut tops we see online or in stores and hastily order them before figuring out the logistics behind actually wearing them successfully.

A while ago I ordered this Forever 21 patterned top online after seeing it look gorgeous and summery on the model.  But when I received it I came across a problem I wasn’t expecting: how do I get it to stay in place so there are no nip slips every time I move?  Lets face it, when you’re going out on the weekends, you’re going to be walking, talking, getting in and out of an Uber, standing, sitting, maybe even dancing, all of which make low cut tops a bit of a hassle.

Here are FOUR ways to add a little extra security to your look without compromising your style:

  1. Belt the shirt in place

This patterned top I wore is a wrap.  When the wrap opens up, that’s when the top part gapes open.  I added a thin black belt right under the boobs to keep the wrap in place.

2. Fashion Tape

Although fashion tape is usually a stylist’s first fashion go-to, it does have its limitations. Before belting this top I tried to tape it and it was not very successful.  A few minutes later after a little bit of movement the tape was still attached to me, but not to the top.  Some types of fabrics aren’t very easy to grip.  This cheap woven polyester top was one of them. However, I did only try using a very small (0.5-1.0 inch size) piece of tape, so there is a chance that using a bigger piece might have done the trick!  Nonetheless, fashion tape is always an option when used appropriately and correctly.

3. Cover it Up!

These stick on nipple covers can be a life saver! If you’re shirt happens to slip, you’re still covered!  You can flail around on the dance floor as much as your heart desires; show off your terrible dance moves, your high kicks, or your twerking abilities, and nobody will see the goods.

4. Plunge backless and strapless bra

The plunging bra is another possible option when wearing low-cut tops.  However, they aren’t always the comfiest option, and personally I’ve always found that they tend to gape if they are not perfectly fitted to you.  Nonetheless, going completely braless isn’t always comfortable for everyone, so this kind of bra can definitely help.

Here’s to having a successful weekend with nothing showing, falling out, or distracting you while on the dance floor.
