How to Style a Dress to Flatter Your Body Type

red dress

Accessorize

When I first ordered this red dress online I thought that it was the most beautiful thing I had seen.  I was wondered it wouldn’t look good on me…red never does…but I bought it anyway because it looked good on the model and I hoped it would do me justice as well.

When I first put it on I stared in the mirror thinking I had just been swallowed up by a sea of red.  It hung past my knees (thanks to my height complex), it had tons of extra material that did absolutely nothing to show off the curves of my body, and it did absolutely nothing for my fair skin tone.

Months later, in another attempt to make this dress work, I tried it on again.  This time I paired it with a pink hat and silver hoop earrings.  I started to get a bit of a boho vibe, totally something that i strive for in my everyday wardrobe.

I snapped a few pics and watched my enthusiasm die as I starred at a short girl trying to pull off a tall girl’s dress.  Then I slipped on high heel boots.  Okay, I can fake my height a bit.

There’s nothing I can do about the fact that red is not my color, but I wanted it to be so I stuck with it.

Add Shape

Then I complained to my boyfriend that the dress was still drowning me.  He suggested I throw on a belt.  I couldn’t believe it but it helped!  It was like a whole new dress.  I had a shape, I had accessories to make it pop, I had heels to fix my height complex, and now I had a whole new look to wear to boozy brunches, wine touring, and classy affairs.

I wore this red dress look to a fashion event in the city and the cameras kept following me all night.  If I hadn’t of been wrapped up in finding a pair of Manolo Blahnik’s to add to my shoe collection, I might have loved it.

I brought out the beautiful red color of this dress by pairing it with a variety of pink and brown.  Last but not least, I wore my Gucci sunglasses to make the look even more chic.

Transition from Winter to Spring with Awesome Street Style

Street Style

Spring Street Style Secrets

With warm weather hopefully just around the corner, I keep dreaming about my favorite Spring staples to pull out from the back of my closet.  It was a long winter wearing puffy jackets.  I’m ready for windbreakers, leather jackets, short skirts, and shorts!  At this time of year when the weather is still fairly unpredictable, (especially in some regions!) I like to wear layers.  Layering smart can help create some pretty chic street style.

I wore the above look to brunch and it was perfect.  I combined plaid and leather and sparkles, creating a look that was equal parts casual, edgy, and feminine.  This is the time to slowly transition from boots to sneakers…and then finally to sandals when the temperature starts rising!

I livened up my dark fall colors (i.e. black jacket and navy plaid shirt) by wearing fun Spring-y accessories like the bold pink handbag and sparkly pink sneakers.  Recently I’ve been obsessed with my extra large silver hoop earrings because they make every look a bit more boho.  I had more than enough excitement going on in this look so I kept my other jewelry minimal.

I wore this look out to brunch on the weekend.  When I don’t want to spend an hour getting ready, I take a few shortcuts.  I cut out hair prep time by doing my hair in a ponytail.  The big silver hoop earrings help make me look stylish without any added primping time.  I can jump out of bed and into the car in ten minutes or less with this look.

In the Spring, it’s easy to keep makeup minimal.  All you need is a freshly washed face a little mascara and a pink tint on your lips.

Here are six items to help you recreate this Spring Street Style look:

The Best High Heels from Katy Perry’s Shoe Collection

I’ve been waiting to get my hands on a pair of Katy Perry shoes.  They’re fun, funky, and a little weird, all of which is exactly what I want.  This season there seems to be a fruit theme happening.  The Citron sandal is so perfect for a summer picnic or weekend brunch with your friends.

The lime ones make me want a dance bar and a margarita in hand.  They can so easily be dressed up or down depending what you pair with them.

These chain link strappy sandals would be fairly ordinary if they didn’t have that unique chain link heel.  The smallest details can set shoes apart and make them truly unique.

The Best Colorblocked Clothing and Accessories for Spring

Spring fashion

I got this dress many years ago from Mango. To this day, it is still one of my favorite dresses that I own. Wearing the most flattering colorblocked dresses comes down to finding ones that incorporate shapes and colors in a way that accentuates your body’s curves in all the right places. For example, vertical stripes down the side of your body can make you look slimmer, whereas horizontal stripes near the waist can make you appear larger. It’s all about positioning and body type.

Here are a few colorblocked items from Revolve that would look very flattering for all kinds of body types.

How to Make a Fancy Black Dress Suitable for a Week Night

black dress

I have so many fancy dresses hanging in my closet and not enough “dazzling dress” events to attend. Sometimes I manipulate a piece to make it work for me, and not the other way around! While some may still think that sequins for holiday parties and that’s it, I vehemently disagree.  I like to think that, “If it sparkles, it’ll make you smile” so why not make sequins a regular part of your wardrobe? Dress them down with these three simple style tips:

1. Wear a Ponytail

Ponytails are great for job interviews, working out, and…dressing down a fancy dress. Nothing says “I’m so chill” more than a ponytail. On one hand it shows everyone that you’re confident enough to go a day without styling your hair down and on the other it says that you can rock anything because you’ve got gorgeous features.

2. Add a Touch of boho

Larger than life silver hoop earrings are the perfect glamorous boho element to add to an evening look. They show that you’re not afraid to have fun, in fact, you’re probably the life of the party.

3. Add Bright Color

Adding bright color accessories to a little black dress makes its seem less “dressy” and more “stylish.” Being bold is different than being fancy. Hot pink or electric blue will turn heads, drawing attention to your outfit as a whole without singling out your oh-so-divine sparkly dress.

5 Black Leather Jackets to Wear When you Ditch your Winter Coats

I know that it hasn’t stopped snowing everywhere yet, but at some point it has to right? Finally it will be time to take off the bulky layers and downsize to a light Spring jacket. This black leather jacket from Zara is one of my go-to’s. It goes with everything and makes any of my “feminine/girly” looks just a touch edgier.  Plus, black on black is always a great idea.

3 Ways to Stay Stylish when it’s Freakin’ Freezing Outside

I love when I come across those open-toe suede booties in stores in March and think what crazy person is itching for frost-bitten toes. Oh wait, that’s me.

When I moved to California in 2013, winter trends like open toe booties (which I thought seemed like an oxy-moron), off-the-shoulder sweaters, and short-sleeve coats all seemed very weird to me. If it’s hot enough to wear open toe shoes, why wear booties? If it’s cold enough to need a sweater, why keep your shoulders bare?  If you have to ruin your outfit with a coat, why cut the sleeves off?

That’s when I discovered warm winters and realized that it can be fun dressing for “winter” if you don’t actually have to worry about the cold.  But when you’re stuck in a locale where you can see your breath when you’re walking outside, you actually need to cover and zip shit up, if you know what I mean.

Faux fur coats are a staple for cold winters.  Being the wild fashionista I am, I chose one that’s pink. Hot pink. Bundling up on top makes it a bit easier to keep the legs bare in a skirt.

It took two minutes for me to whip this outfit together before heading out for brunch.  I paired a simple black leather skirt with a fun graphic tee, slipped into my sparkly pink sneakers, then threw on the pink fur coat with an obnoxiously large pair of gold earrings.

4 Unexpected Trending Colors for Spring

Spring is officially two weeks away! Naturally the best part about the changing seasons is the warmer weather approaching.  New seasons also bring a new color palette.

1. Pink

At the oscars we saw a couple stars wearing hot pink dresses. With the transition from winter to Spring we normally see a natural transition from bold hues to soft pastels, but this Spring looks like we’ll have our choice of fresh new bold hues that are still so fresh and feminine.

With this look I combined my oversized Nasty Gal sweater with my double brushed purple Lula Roe tights. For an evening out I threw on the jeweled headband to make the look a touch more whimsical and indie.

2. Red

That’s right, red is no longer just a holiday-inspired/Valentine’s Day Go-To. Your little red dress or coat can take you from winter to Spring and keep you totally in style.

3. Blue

I fell in love with Diane von Furstenberg at a young age.  There’s no wonder why; this DVF blue patterned dress is totally on trend for Spring and completely affordable.

4. Yellow

It’s not normally my favorite color, but when I see it wrapped up with pink in these adorable lemon sandals (that instantly make me crave a picnic!), I think that yellow can definitely be a great color to accent your wardrobe.

Three Winter Red Dresses Perfect for a Night Out

Why the Grammy’s are just a Political Throwdown Now

Ten years ago I watched the Grammy’s to see my favorite bands perform, dance in my room, and cheer on my favorite musical artists.  This year I find myself watching the show to see who makes the biggest political statement…and yeah okay the live musical performances are nice too.

Political statement number one came from an American singer I had never heard of before, Joy Villa.  She wore a dress with a fetus in a womb on it and a handbag that said pro-life.  Props to you for using fashion to give you publicity but lets all agree, that if you’re pro-trump in Hollywood then you’re setting yourself up for bad publicity.

For those who are still focused on the fashion.  The best way to stun your audience is with a neutral gown.  For those who don’t have the budget of a celebrity, here are a few that are elegant, stunning, and affordable.BCBG gown

How to Get the Perfect Date Night Look

Date nights are the best night of the week. They’re the perfect excuse to pull out your new fall attire, gather up your fave accessories, and enjoy a night of looking ultra-chic.

My go-to style tip: combine casual with fancy for a wildly fantastic ensemble.

Here I combined my new fave Tobi skirt, with a fall suede crop top with fancy sneakers, a trendy leather cap from Go Jane and that sexy pout. I wore Clinique pink lipstick that is just the perfect combination of smooth matte and creamy.

With my hair blowing in the wind, I had to keep it nicely tucked behind my ears. I love having long hair, but those curls can get unruly in the wind!

striped skirt

Tobi

The best thing about warm weather in the fall is wearing those crop tops with an open back. I’ll take advantage of summer attire for as long as possible. This navy and white skirt from Tobi matched perfectly with my Brandy Melville crop top. Unfortunately, they aren’t still selling this exact crop top, but here is a very similar one!

Pink Sweater

Ever wonder which pair of shoes to wear? As a woman who owns almost a hundred pairs of shoes, deciding which ones to wear is what takes up all my time getting ready.

This fall I’m obsessed with girly sweaters. This soft, light pink sweater from Tobi is so comfy, making it perfect for a stay-in date night or a date night on the town. There’s plenty of time to wear dark colors in the winter. While the sun is still shining and the weather is warm, I like to stick with light, feminine colors.

My Chanel sunglasses are the perfect accessory to make any casual look, a tad more sophisticated! No look is complete without the perfect bag. For day time dates with my man I like to wear a big purse to carry anything and everything I might need.

Tobi Sweaters

Before heading out to a romantic dinner spot, I switch the big bag for an evening clutch. This black suede Jimmy Choo clutch is my favorite new accessory! It looks great with anything! I can dress it down with this ultra-chic orchid Tobi sweater, or I can dress it up with a little black dress on the weekends.

The jeans are from Armani Exchange. They look great with bold sweaters. When wearing a sweater that has a color that pops, I like to combine it with neutral accessories: brown Chanel sunglasses, grey skinny jeans, a black bag, and black high heels!

Once you’ve bought the perfect look, all you need is a couple savory tapas and that pink martini to really make the night exciting!

The #1 Thing People Say you Can’t Wear after Labor Day – But, you Totally Can

White – There’s a great myth that fall time means dark colors, rich hues, and heavier fabrics.  Living on the West Coast taught me that obeying seasonal fashion rules is as extinct as listening to CD’s.  Some people say that white shirts are always acceptable, but white bottoms are not.  I spent many years packing away my white jeans and white skirts every September, and then pulling them back out again every May.

The best way to make a white outfit fit for Fall is to add Fall accessories like a pair of high heel booties or a knitted beanie.

The only fashion guide you should follow is the weather.  If it’s warm and sunny, wear sandals and tanks, if it’s cool and cloudy wear sweaters and booties. There are no go-to seasonal rules to follow anymore, the fashion game is a lot less judgmental.

Check out below for a list of hot white skirts to wear this Fall:

Three Fall Sweater Looks that don’t Suck

Buy above pictured sweater here: Forever 21

Despite a drop in temperature, there’s no need for a drop in style every Fall.  Unless you’ve been relishing in the West Coast heat wave that struck last weekend, you’re probably preparing yourself for sweater weather and high heel booties.

While you’re recovering from the loss of your bikini and shorts days, the best cure is finding the perfect fall look.  I like to pair boring sweaters with sexy skirts, high heels, and a statement bag. (Note: On my really adventurous days I rock a pink vacuum just because I can.)

If you’re looking for something a bit more chill, (not everyone can rock a 3 in 1 Bissell), experiment with colorful leggings.  When you’re soul is saddened by the lack of sun, bring that cheerful color into your outfit instead! Take advantage of your highest high heel booties before the snow arrives.

When you’re transitioning between summer and fall weather, take advantage of those days that are in between.  Pairing a warm sweater with shorts and booties might seem like an unusual combo, but if you keep your upper body warm, that’s all you’ll need to pull off this fun, fashion-forward look!

The fall time is notoriously busy! Throwing on a basic sweater and jeans takes two seconds or less.  But to make that quick and easy look, pair it with your favorite accessories!  Go nuts, wear those high heels that make you feel like Elle Woods circa 2001 and wear that chunky bag that screams fall fab!

There are a few major sweater trends to watch for this Fall.  V-necks, cut-outs, and choker sweaters are still all the rage.  If you can get your hands on one that’s soft and silky, sexy, and warm, don’t let it go!

Five Ways to Wear Plaid this Summer

Gone are the days when plaid was just for farmers and lumberjacks.  Plaid is one of those styles that is never in or out, it’s just always there, like a major food group but in the style world.

In the summer I wear plaid as a swimsuit cover up whether I’m sitting by the pool or cruising on a boat.

Plaid dresses are a great daytime go-to whether you’re running errands or going to a party.

Button down plaid shirts are a common wardrobe staple for both men and women!

If you’re ready to get really crazy and dive back into the hippy 70’s, maybe you’ll try a pair of flare plaid pants.  They’re definitely a head turner on their own, so I’d stick with a pretty basic top to match with it.

Three Ways to Wear Summer Grunge

My summer style is often defined by whatever’s easiest to throw on and cover up as little of my body as possible.  Crop tops, off-the-shoulder tops, and cut-out tops make any look a bit grungier.

While I wouldn’t call myself a huge baseball fan, baseball caps are my summer go-to when I’m trying to hide from the sun.  If you’re like me and not one of those lucky people who tan well, baseball caps should be the base point of any look you create.

Wearing jewelry in the summer is great because it’s less likely to be hidden behind your long sleeve tops and sweaters.  Short shorts are never a bad idea on the weekends.  Jean shorts are one of the most versatile summer items you could own.  For an extra grungy look, find a pair with rips and roughly cut edges.

Get the Modern Version of Julia Robert’s Look from Pretty Woman

Twenty-seven years later and the fashion in Pretty Woman is still relevant.  That movie made an impact on us in more ways than one, including it’s fashion.

We were first captivated by Julia Roberts on screen when we saw her in this sexy white and blue cut-out dress.  What was sexy then, is still a trend now!  Cut-out dresses can be found at any store selling trendy items in 2017.  Shop the white and blue dress from ASOS here.

Don’t forget her incredible stripper boots! These boots definitely made an impression on me, and since then I’ve always been searching for the perfect pair.  To be honest, my perfect pair of thigh high patent boots would be hot pink, but you definitely can’t go wrong with these classic black ones.

During the day, she covers up her “lady of the night” look with a tie-up white blouse which you can shop here.

Her transformation from a Hollywood Blvd lady to a Rodeo Dr classy lady is mesmerizing.  Shop the white dress here.

Of course we all remember the red dress she wore in the evening.  Who knew the off-the-shoulder style would be one of the biggest trends of 2017!  You can shop this red gown here.

Three Fashion Staples for a Successful Night Out

As my closet contents continue to grow, I sometimes find myself getting lost in a sea of frilly tops, black dresses, sparkly jewelry, and backless tops.  Having options is great, but there are three fashion staples that can make putting together an evening look quick and simple, and best of all, successful.

  1. My basic black cotton bodycon dress from Forever 21 is my go-to dress when I want to start with a classic and sexy base before bedazzling up my look.  It’s great for layering, and unlike many of my other dresses, it’s long enough to keep my backside covered while dancing all hours of the night!

2. This trendy sheer peach off-the-shoulder top may not stay off the shoulder as much as I’d like it, but it’s still my go-to when I’m trying to add a feminine chic touch to any look!

3. Lastly, silver hoop earrings, especially the obnoxiously large ones that I’m wearing, are a great way to spice up any going out look without being weighed down in pounds of rhinestones or chunky jewelry.  I got these lightweight hoop earrings from Bloomingdales.

If you’re perceptive, you may have picked up on something on my teeth in these pictures.  I like to use white strips before going out.  They help keep my teeth freshly white and sparkly so I can smile until my heart’s content and counteract the evil stains of red wine.  For reference, I use 3D Crest Whitestrips LUXE Professional Effects, and I find they do a great job!

Turning your home into your personal playground doesn’t have to happen all at once.  Like relationships, sometimes you have to search a while until you find your love.  But hopefully when you do, you’ll have all the furniture and accessories you need to make your Netflix and Chill nights a dream come true.

Tips to Avoid Wardrobe Malfunctions While Wearing Low-Cut Tops

One of the problems women face when getting dressed to go out is the dreaded nip slip wardrobe malfunction.  We’ve all been there.  We notoriously fall in love with the attractive low cut tops we see online or in stores and hastily order them before figuring out the logistics behind actually wearing them successfully.

A while ago I ordered this Forever 21 patterned top online after seeing it look gorgeous and summery on the model.  But when I received it I came across a problem I wasn’t expecting: how do I get it to stay in place so there are no nip slips every time I move?  Lets face it, when you’re going out on the weekends, you’re going to be walking, talking, getting in and out of an Uber, standing, sitting, maybe even dancing, all of which make low cut tops a bit of a hassle.

Here are FOUR ways to add a little extra security to your look without compromising your style:

  1. Belt the shirt in place

This patterned top I wore is a wrap.  When the wrap opens up, that’s when the top part gapes open.  I added a thin black belt right under the boobs to keep the wrap in place.

2. Fashion Tape

Although fashion tape is usually a stylist’s first fashion go-to, it does have its limitations. Before belting this top I tried to tape it and it was not very successful.  A few minutes later after a little bit of movement the tape was still attached to me, but not to the top.  Some types of fabrics aren’t very easy to grip.  This cheap woven polyester top was one of them. However, I did only try using a very small (0.5-1.0 inch size) piece of tape, so there is a chance that using a bigger piece might have done the trick!  Nonetheless, fashion tape is always an option when used appropriately and correctly.

3. Cover it Up!

These stick on nipple covers can be a life saver! If you’re shirt happens to slip, you’re still covered!  You can flail around on the dance floor as much as your heart desires; show off your terrible dance moves, your high kicks, or your twerking abilities, and nobody will see the goods.

4. Plunge backless and strapless bra

The plunging bra is another possible option when wearing low-cut tops.  However, they aren’t always the comfiest option, and personally I’ve always found that they tend to gape if they are not perfectly fitted to you.  Nonetheless, going completely braless isn’t always comfortable for everyone, so this kind of bra can definitely help.

Here’s to having a successful weekend with nothing showing, falling out, or distracting you while on the dance floor.

Dressing for a Night Out Dancing with Friends

Ah the weekend comes and goes so quickly, and before you know it, it’s Wednesday.  This past weekend I finally got to put on my dancing shoes and rock some sexy moves on the dance floor.

I wore this brown beaded top that I got from a clothing swap party recently.  Although my boobs didn’t quite fill it out the way the original owner’s did, I say that there’s nothing a double-padded bra can’t fix.

Funny enough, after acquiring this top, I was watching an episode of Shameless from Season 1 and saw Veronica wearing the exact same top but in purple! You know you’re wearing something sexy if the sexy and promiscuous Veronica from Shameless is wearing the same top!  Leave it to me to notice this small detail.  After all, half the fun I get from watching TV shows comes from admiring and being inspired from the fashion.

Low-cut v-neck sleeveless shirts are my favorite for dressing up to go out on the weekends. Here are a few of my favs available to buy now:

Find the Perfect Pink Dress for Spring

You can never have enough Spring/Summer dresses.  Although sometimes I have to actively not buy pink in order to allow for some diversity in my wardrobe, there are some pink dresses that are too hard to resist.  If Legally Blonde is one of your favorite movies, then scroll down for some totally Elle Woods dresses to stock your closet with now.

This one shoulder A-line dress is one of my favorites.  Whether you’re going to a wedding or your going wine touring with friends, this dress is so feminine chic it’s almost hard to handle it’s beauty.  Unlike the dress I’m wearing above, this pink dress has a banded waist that helps create some shape and show off your hard-earned bikini bod.
