One Trend you’re Guaranteed to See at Every Award Show

If you tuned into the Golden Globes last night you probably saw three distinct things: lots of skin, lots of sparkle, and lots of bling.  Every year stylists break down the trends from the red carpet. If you missed the Golden Globe Awards last night that’s okay because there is just one trend you need to know about and two stars you need to see wearing it.  The trend is: the plunging neck-line and the stars are Mandy Moore and Emma Stone.

When you know you’re going to see the same trend each time, you wonder how people can keep it interesting, but many did just that!  Mandy Moore took the approach of a superhero with her plunging neckline cape gown.  Her chunky earrings were the only bling she needed to make her look feminine and sophisticated.

Who wore the plunging neckline the best?  That would be Emma Stone and the reason? Her dress was sparkly!

Like the stars on her dress, Emma Stone really was a star last night.  Like many others, she wore one statement piece, a chunky necklace.

As trends from the Red Carpet continue to trickle down into stores, get ready to throw away your bras.  Who needs them when every dress we’ll be wearing will be plunging.

The New Kind of Detox That Has Everybody Talking

img_1445

As soon as we hear the word, “detox,” people immediately imagine a fridge filled with vegetable juices, a hungry belly, and maybe even a sauna.  Apparently, processed foods aren’t the only toxins people are discarding.

There is a new trend in town, and that is the “digital detox.”

Unlike the juice detox, a digital detox doesn’t limit your food consumption. Instead, it limits your access to your computers, smartphones, and iPads.  The first question you may ask yourself is, “Why would anyone do this?” Our technological advances are part of what keeps our civilization moving forward.  Our phones make us easily accessible; they act as our GPS, they record our favorite moments via pictures and videos, they give us access to the internet on the run, all of which are benefits we enjoy.  So why refrain?

Studies have shown that refraining from technology can help our posture, allow us to make deeper friendships, improve our memory, help us get more efficient sleep, and give us new and refreshing perspectives.

While many of you might currently be formulating your New Year’s resolutions, perhaps a temporary reduction of technology use should be added to the list.  Each person is unique and will feel this feat differently.  Some individual testers have described the experience as “life-changing.”  While I wouldn’t set the bar that high, at the very least, you may discover something new about yourself or the world!  Why not take this step in the new year!

Don’t let your phones be a conversation killer.  Like chocolate cake, technology is incredible in moderation.

Love,
Molly

How Vogue Just Upset Big-Breasted Women

The internet is going crazy over Vogue’s recent article about “cleavage” being out of fashion. In the fashion world, if Vogue says it, people believe it!  But can a body part really go out of fashion?  If anything, I’d say that short dresses that barely cover our butts and have to be pulled down every two seconds while walking, is the trend we should do away with before any other!

cleavage

Cleavage is a natural part of a woman’s body.  Sure we can cover it up with conservative high-neck tops, but saying cleavage is out it like saying butts are out!  I’m sorry, certain things can never really be deemed “out of fashion.”

Showing cleavage has been a time-honored tradition in fashion magazines and runways for a long time now.  With our society taking so many steps forward, the risk of a possible nip-slip in a cleavage-bearing top, isn’t even that bad anymore!  Remember the 2004 Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake superbowl debacle?  That story was talked about forever!  If that were to happen again, it wouldn’t even make it to our Facebook trending topics.  Thanks to Miley Cyrus and Donald Trump, very little shocks us anymore.

For women with small breasts, achieving cleavage in a push-up bra is deemed a proud accomplishment: a way to feel sexier!  I say “sexier” instead of “sexy” because women should feel sexy no matter how they look, whether or not they are showing cleavage!

I think the only thing we should learn from Vogue’s statement about cleavage being “out of fashion” is that no one source, despite how powerful they may be can dictate certain rules. Some things never go out of fashion!

Just Say NO to the “Ugly Shoe” Trend

The worst is happening, the thing that we’ve all dreaded, the thing that we never thought would happen, and no I’m not referring to Trump possibly being elected as President, I’m referring to the mass embrace of “ugly!” shoes!  There is no other word to describe it.  Designers, editors, retailers have not only dubbed the “ugly shoe” trend as “in fashion” but have confirmed this trend is not going away any time soon!

carrie-bradshaw-shock

The very fact that ugly shoes could become a trend, is more than just a little bit scary!  Any shoe that isn’t Carrie from Sex in the City approved, should be worn with caution!  Of course when you’re packing for a trip to a dessert or even just a day of hiking, a functional pair of ugly sandals may be essential, but when we have top celebs and fashion influencers praising these ugly sandals and wearing them as part of their daily fashionable ensemble, it’s time to worry!

Research shows that this past Summer, Birkenstocks were the most googled shoe search. However, it’s not just consumers who have embraced this questionable taste in shoes.  The tastemakers themselves, the high-end designers, are featuring some of the most ugly shoes on the runways.

Despite never making it anywhere near any one of my closets, rubber Crocs somehow found their way onto the New York Fashion Week runways!  Sure these shoes have a place in our shoe industry.  For example, if you break your foot and you’re wearing a cast and you need a comfy shoe to easily slip on and off or if you need something to wear in a public shower then hey, these should be your go-to’s!

Crocs at Zappos

Crocs at Zappos

To make matters worse, Velcro Teva shoes were also seen on the runways!  Even if these shoes had sparkles they’d still be questionable, and there’s very few problems that sparkles can’t fix!

LUISAVIAROMA

LUISAVIAROMA

Experimentation in the world of “ugly” shoes stretches even further than Crocs and plastic slip-ons.  Sandal-boot hybrids were deemed the ugliest shoe of all time by Racked and Cosmopolitan.

UGG

It may seem cliché, but when someone gives you lemons, make lemonade!  Free People did just that with these stylish rugged open toe sandal boots, thereby proving that some of the ugliest trends can be salvaged!  Click to shop other colors!

Free People

Free People

So what is the reason behind this “ugly shoe” trend?  If everyone seems okay embracing shoes that they openly admit are ugly, they must have some other desirable quality: comfort!

Before you jump on the “ugly shoe” bandwagon, consider the alternative: stylish, comfy shoes!

This Fall’s #1 Statement Piece in Every Color!

img_6482On any given year, the Fall is when we can look forward to cool jackets, chic sweaters, and ankle booties!  But this Fall, all my attention has been diverted to leather jackets in a variety of colors!

pink-1

My favorite purchase this fall is this light pink vegan leather jacket from Zara.  I stood in the store for about 45 minutes trying to decide between the light blue or the light pink one.  In the end, my signature color won, and I’m happy it did!

img_6467

Colored leather jackets are the perfect statement piece to wear with any of your Fall basics like a white tee and black skinny pants.

img_6481

Just when I thought my leather jacket quota was reached, I fell in love with this hot pink leather jacket, which you can buy here: Neiman Marcus

img_6469

fullsizerender fullsizerender1 img_6466

One of the best qualities of a leather moto jacket is that grungy, edgy vibe! Since light pink and hot pink doesn’t really scream “wild and edgy” I needed to incorporate another color into my leather jacket collection!  This metallic silver/pewter jacket is my go-to when I want to kick up my “bad girl” vibe! 😉

Cool New Ways to Wear Denim this Fall

After attending a 90’s party this weekend, the combination of listening to Ace of Base and Britney’s Baby One More Time and reflecting on the trends, gave me an even more positive look on the re-emergence of everything denim.

While limited in its versatility, wearing a colored denim jacket this fall is more than A-okay! In fact, my pink denim jacket has been my go-to outerwear piece to throw over a neutral-colored dress.

Hot Fall Picks to Shop ASAP

screen-shot-2016-09-12-at-12-21-52-pmThis season’s trends have gotten me really excited!  The past couple of years I sometimes found myself searching for styles that just weren’t out there.  I could have done without the fringe trend, the romper/jumpsuit trend, and the bodysuit.  But this season’s trends are starting out strong with tons of denim from denim jackets to super destroyed denim.  Oversized blouses and bold metallics are working together to give us looks that are not only effortlessly casual, but simultaneously glamorous and chic!  For jewelry, I’m all about hunting down the perfect pair of ear climbers.

Must-Have Fashion Trends Making a Comeback this Fall

Me and Melis having fun on our Spare! 172When I’m asked to recall the early 2000’s, three things come to mind: 1) Adam Brody, 2) my unfortunate preoccupation with applying way too much sparkly eye shadow, and 3) jean miniskirts.  Even to this day I can’t help but be transformed into the past every time I slip on one of my many short denim skirts.  If I’m not careful putting together the whole look, it doesn’t take long before I’m staring in the mirror looking at an overaged preppy schoolgirl in desperate need of a makeover.  Luckily, wearing a jean miniskirt this fall doesn’t put you behind the times.  In fact, this hot ticket item may be the best way to graduate from your typical skinny jean casual look and say hello to the sexier, yet very understated, new you!

Joe's Jeans

Joe’s Jeans at Zappos

For those of you pushing 30, your hesitation to welcome this trend with open arms is duly noted.  Luckily, jean skirts come in all lengths!  A jean midi skirt is the perfect alternative to the flirtatious jean miniskirt.

When it comes to making the perfect pairings this fall, (no I don’t mean wine and cheese pairings, although those are very important!), oversized and slouchy are your two best friends. To make oversized and slouchy work for you, pair them with one fitted item.  A fitted jean miniskirt with a long oversized cotton poplin white button-down blouse will complement each other like Gouda and Merlot.

Barneys

Barneys

Lastly, as much as our minds want to dissuade us from the impending cool fall weather approaching, coats will soon be inevitable.  Once again, oversized is in.  I can’t get enough of this super chic, oversized grey coat from FarFetch.  It’s got the neutral-tone understated vibe that every sophisticated girl wants, but could turn into a devilishly hot statement piece when paired with some color!

Updating any Fall wardrobe should start with the basics.  Luckily, this Fall the hottest trends can also be some of your most versatile pieces!

When Summer Turns into Fall, FarFetch has you Covered

When guys throw on a button-down shirt over a tee, pair it with dark wash jeans and sneakers, they’re dressed to impress.  But when they top off the look with a leather biker jacket, there’s no stopping them.  The biker jacket is one of those trends I look forward to each season. They’re one of the most versatile pieces you can have in your closet, and that goes for both men and women!

If this is your first foray into the wide world of leather biker jackets, stick with the classic neutral colors: black or grey.  There are so many black leather jackets out there, how do you choose? Pay attention to the details and cut.  A strategically placed zipper can turn a plain biker jacket into a statement piece that no one will be able to ignore.

Admire the jacket both zipped-up and undone.  Both should be flattering and fit you like a glove. Examine the collar; does it give you that dangerous Brad Pitt vibe?

Does the jacket have pockets?  Even if you don’t have a motorcycle to go with it, you never know when you’ll need a spot to hold your smokes.  Not a bad boy? Fine, you can use it to hold your gum.

Once you’ve chosen your biker jacket of choice, learn all the ways to wear it!  Check out FarFetch’s step by step guide below.

Unflattering Fashion Trends we Shouldn’t Stand for Any Longer

Women spend hours at the gym, in front of the mirror applying makeup, reading magazines to learn how to care for our skin, and eating healthy all to keep ourselves looking great and feeling great.  So why, after all this hard work, would we wear something that detracts from all that we’ve got!

Screen Shot 2016-07-21 at 4.04.19 PM

These fashion trends are some of the worst culprits:

romper

Rompers

A.k.a onesies we can wear in public.  I’d be a lot poorer if half the onesies, I mean rompers, out there were actually dresses.  Ever been shopping through the racks when you come across a piece so pretty and cute, only to soon realize that they’ve got shorts instead of a skirt? I sure have, and it’s like spotting a hot guy at a bar only to see his girlfriend approach seconds later.  Not fun.

Harem pants

A.k.a the pants that give the illusion you have no butt. Sexy right? Nah. You’ve seen them before; they have miles of extra material that hangs past your butt and crotch.  They might feel like comfortable pieces of heaven, but they certainly don’t do anything for your figure…except awkwardly deform it! Pass!

Handbags that Look like Food

McDonald’s fries are wonderful, but do I really want my handbag shaped like them? Not really. Watermelon, quesadillas, pizza, they’re all wonderful too, but I prefer eating them not wearing them.  Who’s with me?

Weird Ruffles

Alright, not all ruffles are bad.  They can actually be quite flirty, feminine, and fun.  I’m referring to those unflattering ruffles we see primarily on tank tops.  The ones that make it look like we’ve got something to hide around our tummy region.  The ones that add ten pounds by protruding outwards around our stomach area at awkward times.  I’m all for flowy tops, especially at night after devouring pizza and beer with friends.  Sure, it’s not a crime to cover up your food baby with a forgiving top. But ruffles? Ruffles give you more in the stomach area, not less.

One-Shoulder Tops/Dresses

Did we jump back to the caveman days? That harsh diagonal line, front and center on our chest is like a giant distraction taking away from the natural feminine curves of our bust and collar bones.  I’ll skip the caveman club and leopard print rags that should go along with the one-shoulder trend.  Every once in a while you may find an exception to this rule, but generally, there are much prettier necklines out there!

Be kind to yourself and skip the trends that don’t show off your beauty.

Simple Nail Art that will Have you Setting the Trends

My nail art is often inspired by the desire to put on a variety of different shades at one time.  My standard go-to look, is a solid matte color with sparkles over top.  I mix up the combinations each time to discover fresh new looks.

But this time, I got a little more creative.  This Spring it’s time to give your nails some polarity.  I colored one hand light pink and the other dark pink.  Of course I topped off the look with some flecks of pink.  I still stand by the premise, you can never wear too much pink!

Best Dressed in Sequins at the 2016 Golden Globe Awards

The Golden Globes weren’t the only shiny objects at the 2016 Golden Globe Awards.  There were a ton of sequined dresses that lit up the Red Carpet!  Who had the best dress?  I’ve narrowed it down to these three stunning gowns!

My personal favorite was worn by Olivia Wilde.  The color, the silhouette, the plunging V-neckline, and the shimmery sequins made this dress an absolute winner!

And then there was Brie Larson, looking royal in a gold sequined dress with lots of cut-outs.

Finally, there was Jenna Dewan-Tatum, who stood out in an A-line silhouette.  The navy color was right on trend with the bold color palette this winter season.  Again, we see another plunging V-neckline! This is a trend we’ve seen on the red carpet a lot in the past few years, and it’s one of my favorites!

If you didn’t get a chance to wear your sequined dresses over the holidays, it is not too late!  The hottest celebrities are keeping this trend alive by wearing gorgeous sequined gowns on the red carpet.

Let’s Talk Beauty Trends: Bold Lips and Nude Eyes

This fall it’s all about showing off the lips, and letting the true beauty of your eyes shine through. Not everyone can wear red or orange lipstick like Nicole Kidman and Rachel McAdams, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try.  While pink is normally my go-to shade, I raised the stakes this past weekend with a bold orange Revlon lipstick to match my orange tiger lily flower from my birthday bouquet.

Rick Owens Presents: 69’ing on the Runway

Getty Image, Featured on QUARTZ

Getty Image, Featured on Quartz

Trying to navigate hookup culture, crop tops, and spandex pants has been tough enough…but now designer, Rick Owens has brought the definition of fashion to a whole new level by dressing his models in… people. Yes, people not only wear the clothing; now they are the clothing!

You know that figurative expression that people say, “she looked like sex walking” well…I think this takes that expression to the next level.

Getty Image, Featured on QUARTZ

Getty Image, Featured on Quartz

My question is, is this better or worse than portraying women as sex objects?  Now we’re portraying women as materials…clothing…dresses…shirts…lifeless coverings.  Don’t get me wrong, I think Rick Owen’s idea is tremendously clever.  The runways represent a space where talented, creative people can break down borders and expand our limits of creativity and expression by experimenting with the meaning of style itself.  Controversy is a healthy part of how we grow and develop and expand our definitions of what’s acceptable.  That’s why the clothing we wear changes so dramatically almost every decade.

Let’s take a vote:

Who finds this offensive? Who finds this ingenious? Who finds this weird but cool? Who finds this creative?  Who finds this slightly disturbing? Who finds this innovative and futuristic? Who finds this oddly empowering?

…Who finds this all of the above?

Pencil skirts are great because they give you enough coverage to ensure you don’t show off your ass every time you sit down or stand up.  This pencil skirt however, is special because it has an added sexy touch…a slit in the front on the one side, making the skirt conservative on the right and all party on the left.

Today’s look is inspired by the rich fall colors and luxurious materials dominating store shelves.  Zara’s featuring a bold patchwork skirt with our favorite fall colors, burgundy, navy, beige, and black.  Since the look features some bold pieces, i.e. the shoes and the skirt, I kept the jewelry simple, subtle, and silver.  While you don’t have to, I matched the handbag to the shoes because we want all the attention drawn to the skirt, not the bag.  Take advantage of our nice fall weather by wearing the look without a jacket.  The cold weather will be upon us before we know!

Summer Trend Alert: Pink

A few weeks ago I went browsing through Nordstrom.  I ended up in the dressing room with five items, four of which where pink.

My favorite was by far this body-forming dress in the most beautiful shade of bright pink.  The cut is refreshingly modest with sleeves, a high-neck, and a respectable knee-length.

I tried on a long pink vest, and while it was cute in theory, making a decent outfit out of it seemed a bit difficult!  And while the patterned dress had a slight Diane von Furstenberg thing going for it…it was just too much pattern on me.

Wanna step up your level of comfort?  Jump into a new pair of colorful sneakers.  If you’re vertically-challenged like me, opt for a pair of high platform sneakers.  If you don’t want your shoes to look like you just came from the gym, opt for a pair of sneakers with a fashionable zig-zag sole.  To make your look even funkier, buy a pair of shoe-laces in your favorite color, and replace the boring neutral ones that came with the shoe.  For a large selection of exotic running shoes at a variety of different price points, check out Solestruck.

How To Keep White Shoes Clean

Haha, the title’s an oxymoron.  You can’t!

But here’s why you shouldn’t care.  This season white is everywhere.  From tops, to pants, to dresses, and down to your shoes, the color of purity is key.

Shoes will inevitably get dirty or scuffed-up the more you wear them, and yes these marks are easier to see on white fabric, but white shoes have their time and place.  These Giuseppe Zanotti’s would look devilishly good with a pair of white skinny jeans to wear to the bar.

Add a little sense of lightness to your look with these feather Jeffrey Campbell shoes.

If you’re dressing up for the evening, add a little bit of sparkle with these rhinestone peep-toe pumps from Nordstrom.

White shoes will look great paired with a pair of white jeans, a summer flare dress, or even something as casual as blue jean overalls.  Avoid puddles and dirt if possible, but other than that, it’s time to give your white shoes some street time.

Hot Spring Trend Alert: The Midi

This spring you’ll have to find a different way to show off your legs because we’re all going more conservative in professional and sophisticated knee-length dresses.  Whether you’re going on a date, going to a party, going ou for brunch, going wine touring in Napa, or going to work, there are midi dresses for each of these occasions.

For more casual events try a midi that has some sort of pattern like stripes or florals, and goes into a soft, flared skirt.  If you want to wear one to work, opt for one that hugs the body without being too tight or too flared, and has 3-quarter length or long sleeves.  If you’ve got a brunch or day-trip to Napa planned, wear a midi in a soft neutral or pastel color like beige, violet, light pink, light blue, etcetera.  Opt for one that has some structural details like a visible zipper, collar, or belted waist.

Want to get a little more bold? Gucci’s Spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection featured this bright orange midi.

Got a party on the agenda? You could go fiery hot in a bold red or orange midi, or go for a sizzling slinky blue or teal body-con bandage dress.

For a classy and sexy evening look, you’ll be a knockout in a black midi that has sheer mesh sleeves, hot cutouts, and a low-cut back.

What’s your favorite midi style?!

This Spring’s Hottest Jewelry

I was inspired by a woman’s chunky necklace the other day.  It was feminine, bold, and refreshing. So I scoured the web to find pieces of jewelry that I think stand out in their own unique way.

First, there was Stella & Dot.

These chunky necklaces insert bold colors like blue and orange, and combine metals with fabric to create a wonderful hybrid between a piece of jewelry and a collar.  And how do you do Spring time jewelry better than with floral designs?

Spring time means one thing.  Less clothing.  What better way to show off your body than with a piece of body chain jewelry that wraps around your neck, torso, and shoulders.  Indie designer, Vanessa Mooney, keeps styles interesting by offering an assortment of gold chains that will highlight your body’s shape and take your outfit to the next level.  First, we’ll just have to figure out how to put this body chain on…I hope it comes with instructions!

On those evenings you have a fancy affair to attend (excuse my old English, I’ve been watching a little bit too much of Mr Selfridge lately), Swarovski gives us all that we need to look elegant and lavish.

I know that not as many people wear watches anymore; afterall, who needs one when you can just pull out your smartphone?  But wearing a watch doesn’t always have to be for a practical reason.  The above Swarovski watch is tasteful, glamorous, and simple, and will make any outfit just a tad more dazzling.

Next we’re moving from the wrist to fingers with these two divine chunky rings.  Make your statement with large colored gems.  There’s a time for being simple and subtle, and then there’s a time to be bold and colorful.

Sometimes an outfit needs a bit of a pick me up.  Not a complete mouth to mouth, but a little jolt, like a morning coffee.  Featured below, we have a bold Swarovski necklace made perfect with square shapes of all different sizes.  This statement doesn’t need color.  It combines shapes and textures to create the ultimate attention-grabber.

But not every necklace needs to be that forward.  Perhaps all your outfit needs is a bit of sparkle and a bit of shine.  The necklace featured below could be paired with a strapless cocktail dress for a lovely evening outfit, or even with round collared casual cotton tee.

Last but not least, Swarovski combines bold colors, a variety of shapes, gems and metals in this collar necklace.  From soft to rigid edges, this necklace is sculpted perfectly to create a fun, festive chunky necklace.
