How to Style a Dress to Flatter Your Body Type

red dress

When I first ordered this red dress online I thought that it was the most beautiful thing I had seen.  I was wondered it wouldn’t look good on me…red never does…but I bought it anyway because it looked good on the model and I hoped it would do me justice as well.

When I first put it on I stared in the mirror thinking I had just been swallowed up by a sea of red.  It hung past my knees (thanks to my height complex), it had tons of extra material that did absolutely nothing to show off the curves of my body, and it did absolutely nothing for my fair skin tone.

Months later, in another attempt to make this dress work, I tried it on again.  This time I paired it with a pink hat and silver hoop earrings.  I started to get a bit of a boho vibe, totally something that i strive for in my everyday wardrobe.

I snapped a few pics and watched my enthusiasm die as I starred at a short girl trying to pull off a tall girl’s dress.  Then I slipped on high heel boots.  Okay, I can fake my height a bit.

There’s nothing I can do about the fact that red is not my color, but I wanted it to be so I stuck with it.

Add Shape

Then I complained to my boyfriend that the dress was still drowning me.  He suggested I throw on a belt.  I couldn’t believe it but it helped!  It was like a whole new dress.  I had a shape, I had accessories to make it pop, I had heels to fix my height complex, and now I had a whole new look to wear to boozy brunches, wine touring, and classy affairs.

I wore this red dress look to a fashion event in the city and the cameras kept following me all night.  If I hadn’t of been wrapped up in finding a pair of Manolo Blahnik’s to add to my shoe collection, I might have loved it.

red dress

I brought out the beautiful red color of this dress by pairing it with a variety of pink and brown.  Last but not least, I wore my Gucci sunglasses to make the look even more chic.

Dressing for a Night Out Dancing with Friends

Ah the weekend comes and goes so quickly, and before you know it, it’s Wednesday.  This past weekend I finally got to put on my dancing shoes and rock some sexy moves on the dance floor.

I wore this brown beaded top that I got from a clothing swap party recently.  Although my boobs didn’t quite fill it out the way the original owner’s did, I say that there’s nothing a double-padded bra can’t fix.

Funny enough, after acquiring this top, I was watching an episode of Shameless from Season 1 and saw Veronica wearing the exact same top but in purple! You know you’re wearing something sexy if the sexy and promiscuous Veronica from Shameless is wearing the same top!  Leave it to me to notice this small detail.  After all, half the fun I get from watching TV shows comes from admiring and being inspired from the fashion.

Low-cut v-neck sleeveless shirts are my favorite for dressing up to go out on the weekends. Here are a few of my favs available to buy now:

Ella Moss ($118)

DVF ($198)

Saks ($790)

FarFetch ($502.56)

This Spring’s Hottest White Tops to Buy without Breaking your Budget

For strategic reasons, I don’t often buy white tops.  They stain easily, they lose their bright white color in the wash, they’re sometimes see-through, they require white bras, and they turn yellow when you sweat.  Putting those common issues aside and focusing on style, there are so many different ways to complete your look with a white top!

The guide to buying the hottest white tops starts with one of the trendiest styles this season: the off-the-shoulder top!

There are so many off-the-shoulder varieties to choose, including:

The simple classic elastic band:

Nordstrom ($35)

The half on half off:

Nordstrom ($26.98)

The subtly sexy criss cross:

Nordstrom ($49)

The more conservative long sleeve:

Forever 21 ($22.90)

Shopbop ($19.50)

And finally, when you don’t want off the shoulder, the classic white peplum top is the perfect professional and chic top for work attire.

Macy’s ($29.99)

White tops are perfect to pair with your favorite skinny or flare jeans! When you want to make them work appropriate, pair them with wide leg trousers or a pencil skirt.

Mastering the Art of a Costume Party

I’ve never really been that into costume parties, primarily because I always chose my costumes five minutes before the party.  Recently however, I’ve discovered how much fun a costume party can be if you LOVE your costume, and put more than five minutes of thought into it.

Several years ago my dad got me a pink hard hat and that’s when construction worker became my “go-to” costume.  I finished off the look with a construction vest and a pink tool belt for my waist.

Every costume needs something special to make it stand out.  While the pink hard hat is already pretty flashy, I wore 6-inch platform heels to feminize the look a tad bit more!

The best costumes, in my opinion, are the ones that are loosely based off something, and then bedazzled with your own burst of personality.  Since my daily style is typically ultra-feminine and girly, for costume parties it’s fun to play a different role, a more masculine role…Something out of my comfort zone, but oddly satisfying and quirky.  The construction worker costume fits all my requirements.

While I didn’t fix any pot holes this weekend (Sorry San Francisco!), I did have a lot of fun pretending.

5 Wardrobe Pieces Every Millennial Needs in their Closet

As millennial’s, we’re running from work to happy hour to our dinner dates often without being able to go home in the midle.  When time is limited and our style is important, how do we satisfy both?  The key for style success as a millennial involves five key wardrobe pieces.

The Edgy Leather Jacket

Leather jackets are one of the most versatile pieces you can own because they give off a different vibe depending on how you pair them.

The Strapless Bra

The strapless bra may be your most convenient piece in your wardrobe because it will work with a wide variety of outfits.  In the day of course you’re more than covered, but at night when you want to strip down to your strapless dress, you’ll be covered without those annoying bra straps showing.

Little Black Cocktail Dress

This off-the-shoulder dress is the perfect example of a dress that will make you love the convenience of your strapless bras.  A sweater of jacket can make it more conservative by day.  It’s simple and elegant and can be dressed up with the perfect jewels for an evening out.

The Chunky High-Heeled Bootie

Of course we all want to impress when we say we’ve been wearing our high heels all day from the office to our walk home or to the bar, but who really wants to do it in stilettos?  A chunky high-heeled bootie with a cushy sole and a small platform is a woman’s best friend and best kept secret.

The Baseball Cap

While I’ve never been much of a hat person, I recently found a brown leather baseball cap that has proven to be invaluable to me on many different occasions.

Whether you’re going to a sports game, hiding from the sun, running errands without makeup, or just trying to add some sportiness to your look, a leather baseball cap is a more stylish alternative to the typical sports baseball cap that many guys wear.

Cool New Ways to Wear Denim this Fall

After attending a 90’s party this weekend, the combination of listening to Ace of Base and Britney’s Baby One More Time and reflecting on the trends, gave me an even more positive look on the re-emergence of everything denim.

While limited in its versatility, wearing a colored denim jacket this fall is more than A-okay! In fact, my pink denim jacket has been my go-to outerwear piece to throw over a neutral-colored dress.

You can shop this light pink denim jacket from Urban Outfitters here:

Urban Outfitters

Urban Outfitters

Starting with our feet and working our way up, we’ve got wild denim boots trending this Fall.

We’ve gotten a bit edgier since the 90’s.  Ripped jeans have taken on a whole new meaning this season.  Just take a look at these open thigh denim.

Whoever said denim jackets couldn’t be sexy, is clearly wrong.  They may be casual, but you can dress them up in a million different ways!

Balance the Classy with the Edgy in all your Summer Looks

Another way I like to make my predominantly feminine wardrobe a bit edgier, is with a stack of silver rings!  Just because you’re wearing pink lipstick, pink shoes, a pink skirt, and pink shades, doesn’t mean you can’t wear it with a black chocker or a some chunky rings and black nail polish.

Have you ever had a combined party: two people celebrating their birthdays for example? I love to do the same thing with my outfits: wrap two parties into one.   It might be an all classy and girly cocktail party at first glance, but then when you take a closer look you see that there’s a whole other party happening, and it usually involves an oversized watch, too many silver jewels, and dark nail polish.  So go ahead, experiment; find the perfect match between your sexy and sweet, and your edgy daredevil.

Hot Boho Chic Style for Summer in a Few Fast and Simple Steps

Screen Shot 2016-06-05 at 11.36.26 AM

It’s another sunny day in June.  When I want to cut back on the time it takes for me to get ready in the morning and leave my place, I follow a few simple steps.

First: I slip on a comfy, boho chic dress.  This summer my go-to would be a lacy, off-the-shoulder dress.

Second: I grab two pieces of the chunky jewelry displayed across my dresser.  Either all silver or all gold.  For a boho chic look I usually go with silver.

Third: I choose the sandals that slip on and off easily.

Fourth: Add mascara and lip balm and nothing else.

Fifth: I scrunch up my hair with Marc Anthony’s Dream Waves Beach Spray for perfect beachy wavy hair.

Sixth: Grab my Ray Bans.

Ta-da! I’m ready for another hot summer day!

Upgrade your Spring wardrobe with Some New Pumps

Beautiful sunny days in San Francisco remind me to take off my boots and slip into a pair of pumps for a classy, professional look.  This Spring I’ll be wearing purples, pinks, and light blues to brighten up all my outfits.  So what should you pair with a bold pumps? Try a pencil jean skirt, with white and rose gold accessories.  Luckily, off-the-shoulder tops are making a comeback this season! When you’re watching reruns of The O.C., all those early 2000’s off-the-shoulder tops you see on the show, will give you inspiration to maximize one of this season’s hottest trends!

How to Stop yourself from Buying Something you’ll Never Wear

Ever regret a clothing purchase?  Sometimes I stare at my closet wondering how some of the items ever got in it!  Remember those partly sheer leopard print pants that you thought were so cool you just had to have them?  Now you look in your closet unable to fathom how you could have ever liked them?

Start by asking yourself a series of questions.

  1. Out of everything currently in my closet, what would I wear with it?
  2. So you think you’ll be courageous enough to sport a hot pink, open back dress to the party? Put yourself at the party.  What are others wearing? Put yourself in your closet just hours before the event, what are your options?  Does that dress still seem viable?
  3. Not sure about the item in question? Walk away.  Don’t worry you can always go back.  Hours later ask yourself, do I still want the item?  Wait til the next day, then ask yourself again, do I still want that item? Like with men, the one you can’t stop thinking about, is probably the one you should be pursuing.  If you can’t stop thinking about the clothing item, go back and get it!
  4. How long will the item last?  Is it cheap? Will it ball up or tear? Is the item seasonal or can it be worn all year around?
  5. Do I already own something that’s very similar to the item?
  6. Is there something I want more?  In the moment, a piece of clothing or a pair of shoes may sweep us off our feet, but we’re suddenly brought back to earth when we find something we love even more.  Explore your options, look around and see if you can find anything that tops that item.

IMG_019511At some point, you have to make the final decision.  Do I want this {insert wild and crazy wardrobe piece here}? Hopefully these questions will help you avoid those moments of regret after buying something that you now can’t stand.

Wear that Dress you like, Skintight…

Yes, you guessed it…The title is part of the lyrics to a Selena Gomez song. Which one? Good for You, that song with a sexy video of Selena rolling around on the couch and the floor.

I know I spend a lot of time talking about dresses, but that’s because I love them and they’re a major staple in my wardrobe.  This dress is one of my favs.  I bought it about five years ago from Mango.  The splash of red is what really makes this dress unique!

I love how the dress hugs my body without constraining it.  And when you’re going out in the winter, it doesn’t hurt to have long sleeves!  It’s perfect for a date night, dinner, party, bar, etc.

Bring in the New Year with 4 Awesome Style Resolutions

So far it’s been a great holiday break.  Lots of lounging at bars, drinking with friends, dining out, and spending time with family.

The New Year is a time to make resolutions we’ll never keep. I like to focus mine on style resolutions that are equal parts wild, fun, and bold.

Resolution #1: Rock the thigh high boots whenever possible.

Resolution #2: Don’t underestimate the power of a sweater dress.  They’re warm, comfy, stylish, and cute.  What more could you want?

Resolution #3: Rock the red lipstick despite not being able to pull it off quite as well as Taylor Swift or Nicole Kidman.  There’s nothing wrong with trying!

Resolution #4: Bring in the New Year with some awesome chunky ring bling!

The Little Black Dress

What’s the best thing about the holidays?  There’s lots of opportunities to dress up!  The parties and celebrations, nights out with old friends from home, dinners with family, and an overall cheery mood at your local bars!

Every year my collection of little black dresses seems to grow almost exponentially.  This season I’m all about the backless dresses.  The dress above turns into a party when the sweater comes off because it reveals a nearly backless design.  More dresses and pictures to come. 😉

Happy Holidays!

Fall/Winter Essentials: The Style Guide

GUEST POST by Peter Minkoff

Now that the cold weather has settled in, it’s time to clean up our wardrobes and make some room for the ultimate cold-weather pieces.  Many different trends are rocking the fashion industry, and we are here to inform you about the essentials for this fall/winter. Check them out.

  1. Normcore Meets Glamcore
Featured on The Newest Addiction Blog

Featured on The Newest Addiction Blog

This unisex fashion trend characterized by unpretentious clothes such as high-waist jeans, plain shirt, and classic leather sneakers, has been spiced up this fall! It was pretty much about trying to look average – however, it doesn’t simply mean getting the first white t-shirt out of your closet and pairing it up with another basic. An accurate research is required in order to find the perfect items. This fall puts a spin on normcore – it evolved into glamcore! Anonymous jeans and dull sneakers have been replaced with vibrant fur coats and oversized belts, as well as with luxurious headpieces and furry shoes.

2. Oversized Sweaters

A gorgeous oversized sweater with the most amazing knit is definitely a must-have piece for this season. Many people would agree that fall is a perfect season, simply because it allows them to snuggle their heads onto their favourite sweaters. That feeling of cosiness is the best. No matter whether you go for a turtleneck or for a regular one – you won’t make a mistake. If you think that you will look too bulky in it – don’t worry. Just choose the one with a slightly thinner knit in your favourite colour.

3. Boho Pieces

Boho chic is once again one of the leading trends of this season. It is characterised with magnificent embroidery, fringes and floaty clothes made of natural fabrics in earthy colours. Peasant blouses, maxi skirts and dresses, and fringed leather jackets are highly required in this trend. Also, poncho is an IT item for this fall/winter, since it can transform each outfit into chic and ultra modern one. Boho is definitely much more than just a trend that will pass sooner or later – it’s a state of mind that was typical of gypsies and their lifestyle.

4. Statement Jewellery

Courtesy of Harper’s Bazaar

Bling has made a huge comeback this season, and it can be seen in the form of brooches and big earrings that were presented by the most influential brands – Chanel, Prada and Balenciaga. These will certainly add a touch of glamour to a casual outfit, and you can deliberately pair them up with aforementioned oversized sweaters. That’s a match made in heaven!

5. Bathing Suit as Daywear

Images featured on Lookbook and Bossip

Bathing suit is no longer meant just for the beach and sun-kissed skin. Think of it as of another piece of your wardrobe, because you can really pair it up with some basic pieces for an ultimate IT look. Just focus on the materials that will help it blend in perfectly – such as leather and denim. Many designers have gone crazy about athletic wear, and came up with stylish versions of swimsuits you can layer. Match a sequin bikini top with a floor-length matching skirt and adding some eccentric jewelry for a glamorous evening look. One-piece suits can be combined with a button-up and flared jeans. Of course, latest swimwear sale is your way to go when it comes to this trend, because you can save a lot of money and get an extraordinary piece perfect for different outfits.
Numerous amazing trends are very popular this season, and it is up to you to choose the most appropriate pieces according to your preferences. The fashion industry definitely has no boundaries, which sends a message that you should play and have fun while choosing your perfect outfit. That’s definitely a key to success.

Halloween 2015: Riding back to the 1920’s in Style

This Halloween I went back in time to the 1920’s. As I walked into a fancy restaurant establishment, I couldn’t help but feel natural, like a real flapper in the 1920’s.  Of course, when I sat down and ordered my glass of wine, I was very happy to not actually be in the 1920’s with prohibition laws in place.

A Dress for the Classic Chic Woman

Screen Shot 2015-10-24 at 6.19.09 PM Screen Shot 2015-10-24 at 6.19.19 PM

I came across this dress in my daily excursions through my favorite online sites.  It struck me as sophisticated, bold, sexy, and professional…everything a young woman could want! Despite the open-back making it impractical to wear a bra, this dress would be perfect for a work event or function.  Wear it with a pair of black stiletto pumps and a black clutch. While this dress is perfect on its own, it would also look great with a thick black belt around the waist.

Outfit of the Day: Sophisticated Chic on the Streets of SF

shul outfit on lombard

Today’s look features a button down top and pencil skirt from Mendocino.

Pencil skirts are great because they give you enough coverage to ensure you don’t show off your ass every time you sit down or stand up.  This pencil skirt however, is special because it has an added sexy touch…a slit in the front on the one side, making the skirt conservative on the right and all party on the left.

Sexy and Chic Fall Look

Today’s look is inspired by feminine rocker chic style.  Since it’s fall I’m welcoming in the suede skirts, leather handbags, and leather moto jackets (yes, they’re STILL in style!).

The conservative pink button-down shirt will add a professional, feminine touch to create a great juxtaposition with the rocker vibes coming from the studded skirt and leather jacket.

The earrings, fun and pink and on trend with the fringe craze, will let you keep your look fun and whimsical.

I don’t know about you, but I’m all about these cat-eye sunglasses! The brown will lighten up the look a bit.  The grey handbag fits in nicely with the silver detailing throughout the look.

Best and Worst Looks from the 2015 VMA Awards

Ahh…award shows.  Who actually cares about the awards? It’s all about the fashion right? Of course!

So where should we start…

We all know that gender lines are being crossed…and yes I’m happy about it.  But Scarlett Johansson’s pink jumpsuit is perhaps a bit too…I don’t know… if it were me, I’d wear the fanciest dress possible to every award show I was invited too! Not my favorite, Scarlett, but good job on the color!

Victoria Justice nailed it! Her sparkly Versace dress is designed for ultimate envy! Beautiful.  Just absolutely perfect. It’s pink, black, silver, sparkly, sexy (not slutty), feminine, unique, geometrically-pleasing… the list goes on and on. What do you think of it?

Maia Mitchell…the dress was too plain…too casual…too normal.  This is an award show people, pull out all your bedazzles!  The little black dress idea is great…but find one with a bit of sparkles or a unique design!  Even the shoes were simple.  If you’re going to wear a simple, modest dress, at least make your shoes or accessories over the top!

Halston Sage looked beautiful in this uniquely crafted plunging multi-colored cutout dress.

So what did we learn from this year’s MTV VMA awards? Plunging necklines are always great! Sequins and bright colors are divine, but always choose a dress over a jumpsuit!  And if you’re going to go for a plain and elegantly simple dress, at least make your accessories stand out!

Fall Trends: The Suede Patchwork Skirt

FullSizeRender copy 3

Today’s look is inspired by the rich fall colors and luxurious materials dominating store shelves.  Zara’s featuring a bold patchwork skirt with our favorite fall colors, burgundy, navy, beige, and black.  Since the look features some bold pieces, i.e. the shoes and the skirt, I kept the jewelry simple, subtle, and silver.  While you don’t have to, I matched the handbag to the shoes because we want all the attention drawn to the skirt, not the bag.  Take advantage of our nice fall weather by wearing the look without a jacket.  The cold weather will be upon us before we know!

Style Tips for your 4th of July Outfit

Created with the StyleChat App

Created with the StyleChat App

If you want to wear a Fourth of July outfit with all three colors, red, white, and blue (without looking cheesy) let your accessories help!  Pick two colors to wear the clothing part of the outfit.  A white midi skirt will make you look summery, while a red top will help make your outfit bold.  Try matching your sunglasses to your top for an extra splash of boldness.  Depending on the weather or where you’ll be going, keep your shoes comfy and cute.

Use your accessories to add the final color into your look.  Here I have chosen a blue Tory Burch bag and blue earrings.

In total you have a look with two items of white (skirt and shoes), two items of red (top and sunglasses), and two items of blue (purse and earrings).

Now that you’ve got the perfect celebratory look…it’s time to celebrate!

Here’s hoping that your Fourth of July is filled with fireworks, friends, food, fun…and drinks!

Fifty Shades of Pink

Created with the StyleChat App

Created with the StyleChat App

This summer it’s time to add a little pink to your look.  From handbags to shoes to coats to skirts to tops to lipstick to nail polish and much much more, take your pick of pink.  In handbags we’re seeing anything from a small clutch to a full-sized satchel in pink.  If you can’t afford the pink Chanel bag featured above, try the light pink knockoff from Aldo (also featured above).

Bring out the Elle Woods in you with pink lipstick, pink nail polish, and pretty pink pumps.

Want just a subtle touch of pink?  Keep your outfit neutral and add a touch of pink with a chunky necklace or a statement ring.

Pink shoes can go a long way in adding some flavor to a basic skinny jeans and t-shirt look.
