How to Style a Dress to Flatter Your Body Type

Accessorize

When I first ordered this red dress online I thought that it was the most beautiful thing I had seen.  I was wondered it wouldn’t look good on me…red never does…but I bought it anyway because it looked good on the model and I hoped it would do me justice as well.

When I first put it on I stared in the mirror thinking I had just been swallowed up by a sea of red.  It hung past my knees (thanks to my height complex), it had tons of extra material that did absolutely nothing to show off the curves of my body, and it did absolutely nothing for my fair skin tone.

Months later, in another attempt to make this dress work, I tried it on again.  This time I paired it with a pink hat and silver hoop earrings.  I started to get a bit of a boho vibe, totally something that i strive for in my everyday wardrobe.

I snapped a few pics and watched my enthusiasm die as I starred at a short girl trying to pull off a tall girl’s dress.  Then I slipped on high heel boots.  Okay, I can fake my height a bit.

There’s nothing I can do about the fact that red is not my color, but I wanted it to be so I stuck with it.

Add Shape

Then I complained to my boyfriend that the dress was still drowning me.  He suggested I throw on a belt.  I couldn’t believe it but it helped!  It was like a whole new dress.  I had a shape, I had accessories to make it pop, I had heels to fix my height complex, and now I had a whole new look to wear to boozy brunches, wine touring, and classy affairs.

I wore this red dress look to a fashion event in the city and the cameras kept following me all night.  If I hadn’t of been wrapped up in finding a pair of Manolo Blahnik’s to add to my shoe collection, I might have loved it.

I brought out the beautiful red color of this dress by pairing it with a variety of pink and brown.  Last but not least, I wore my Gucci sunglasses to make the look even more chic.

Three Fall Sweater Looks that don’t Suck

Buy above pictured sweater here: Forever 21

Despite a drop in temperature, there’s no need for a drop in style every Fall.  Unless you’ve been relishing in the West Coast heat wave that struck last weekend, you’re probably preparing yourself for sweater weather and high heel booties.

While you’re recovering from the loss of your bikini and shorts days, the best cure is finding the perfect fall look.  I like to pair boring sweaters with sexy skirts, high heels, and a statement bag. (Note: On my really adventurous days I rock a pink vacuum just because I can.)

If you’re looking for something a bit more chill, (not everyone can rock a 3 in 1 Bissell), experiment with colorful leggings.  When you’re soul is saddened by the lack of sun, bring that cheerful color into your outfit instead! Take advantage of your highest high heel booties before the snow arrives.

When you’re transitioning between summer and fall weather, take advantage of those days that are in between.  Pairing a warm sweater with shorts and booties might seem like an unusual combo, but if you keep your upper body warm, that’s all you’ll need to pull off this fun, fashion-forward look!

The fall time is notoriously busy! Throwing on a basic sweater and jeans takes two seconds or less.  But to make that quick and easy look, pair it with your favorite accessories!  Go nuts, wear those high heels that make you feel like Elle Woods circa 2001 and wear that chunky bag that screams fall fab!

There are a few major sweater trends to watch for this Fall.  V-necks, cut-outs, and choker sweaters are still all the rage.  If you can get your hands on one that’s soft and silky, sexy, and warm, don’t let it go!

The Pair of Jeans that Caused an Internet Uproar + Other Fashion Trends your Grandparents Won’t Understand

The article’s title states that your grandparents won’t understand these trends, but lets be honest I, along with many others, don’t really understand them either.

Yesterday, Nordstrom was under fire for selling a pair of intentionally mudded jeans for $425.

Nordstrom’s product description stated that these jeans, “…embody rugged, Americana workwear that’s seen some hard-working action with a crackled, caked-on muddy coating that shows you’re not afraid to get down and dirty.”  But I want to let you all in on a secret.  I know of a way you can get the exact same look, and trust me you’ll have a lot more fun doing it and it won’t cost you $425.  Put on a pair of your jeans, find your nearest ditch, then roll around in it. Repeat until your jeans are muddy to your desire.  It may cost you a bit of your dignity, but hey you’ll be “in-fashion” and you’ll still have your $425 in the bank!

The same brand was also selling this pair of jeans.  Although their regular retail price was $395, they’re now on sale for $177.

Once again, for this style of jean I can let you in on another secret.  You can get this look for a lot less.  Buy a pair of cheap jeans, then buy white and black paint.  Then roll around in it.  Voila!  I just saved you $200.  Your welcome.

Men’s fashion isn’t the only one jumping on this strange bandwagon.  Women’s fashion this season is filled with ripped clothing and see-through clothing, which questionably defeats the purpose of wearing clothing in the first place.

If you thought those mudded jeans were bad, how do you feel about see-through jeans?

While the internet erupted over the $425 mudded jeans from Nordstrom, I wonder how this $750 ripped Givenchy tee at Nordstrom didn’t get any flack?

Ripped sweaters don’t have to be expensive though.  You can get cheap version from Forever 21.

Dammit!  Why did I throw away all those shirts and sweaters that ripped when I was a kid. Maybe hoarders have the right idea.  You never know when your trash may become a fashion trend, proving that almost anything is possible in 2017!

Note: Although this article may seem critical of these bizarre fashion trends, I just want to be clear that I LOVE weird fashion trends.  In fact, the weirder the better!  And if those mudded jeans were $40 and didn’t have any mud around the crotch area, then they may actually be pretty cool!  As for the see-through jeans, if you can deal with how uncomfortable they are, then why the hell not?  They’re weird and awkward, but then again, “weird and awkward” are two of the best characteristics in fashion…and in people, right?!  As for the very “holy” clothing, I think distressing can look awesome when it’s done right, but sometimes it just looks a little too forced when the rips are overwhelmingly present throughout the garment.

I Wore an Evening Gown in the Ocean and it was Perfect

When I first heard that people were getting together to dress up in formal wear and go to the beach, I was beyond intrigued.  I love dressing up and I love the beach with the beautiful ocean and the hot sand, but never have I ever thought that I would end up combining the two!

My dress search began a week ago.  I needed an inexpensive long evening dress that I wouldn’t have to get altered.  The hardest part was finding a dress that I wasn’t sad to wreck, but also one that I’d love to wear.

This Forever 21 dress fit all of my criteria!  Best of all, it wasn’t too long for me!  Seeing as how I am 5 foot 3.5 inches tall, I’ve always had to get long dresses shortened.  It was a very pleasant surprise to find a maxi dress that I wasn’t tripping over!

The first plunge into the ocean was incredible.  There is something so cathartic about running into the freezing cold waves not only fully clothed, but wearing fancy attire!

This photo happened when an unsuspecting, powerful wave knocked me down.  Of course by that point, with my dress already ruined, I took the opportunity to have a photo shoot to capture this ridiculous moment!

Give your Button-Down Shirt a Sexy Remodel

A button-down shirt can give you very different results depending on what you pair it with.  Sure you can be professional and classy in a white button-down at the office on a Thursday, but come Thursday night your button down has a few less buttons done up and your pinstriped pants are exchanged for an above-the-knee skirt.

Shirt: M for Mendocino, Skirt: Forever 21, Belt: Bebe, Tank top: Forever 21

Shirt: Costa Blanca, Skirt: Forever 21, Belt: Bebe, Tank top: Forever 21, Bracelet: Peoples Jewelers

To accessorize, I’ve added very modest jewelry to the look. Gold and pink triangle earrings, a diamond bracelet that combines both yellow and white gold, and a couple silver rings for a final everyday touch.

Shoes: Calvin Klein from DSW

Uncharacteristically of me, I slipped on a pair of flats that normally collect more dust in my closet than my childhood easy bake oven.  But hey, some days I vow to embrace my vertically-challenged stature.

How to Make your Dresses More Versatile

For yesterday’s look I took a pink dress from Zara and made it more casual by wearing a long button-up sweater dress from Forever 21.  I threw on my black cowboy booties but something was still missing, so I added a blue and white plaid scarf.  Not pictured here is my beaded navy headband that I wore as well.  To get the look you want, you need a splash of color (pink dress), a casual element to make the look effortless (the sweater dress), a show stopper accessory (the scarf), and a touch of sparkle (the headband).  Last but not least I turned to my trusty ruffed up leather messenger bag from Club Monaco so I could card around my laptop in style.

The next dress I’m wearing is an off-the-shoulder blue striped cotton dress from Forever 21.  This dress can be worn with jewelry to dress it up, or with nothing to keep it effortless and sexy for a casual day strolling the streets.  I love this one because I can go from naked to ready to go out in less than one second by throwing on this casual and comfy dress and nothing else.

Be a Style Icon in Bodycon

Dress: Forever 21

Dress: Forever 21

With the Spring approaching and warm weather on the rise, it’s time to do your legs some justice in bodycon silhouettes.  I experimented with my new navy bodycon dress from Forever 21, pairing it with different jewelry, different accessories, and colorful clothes.

Try pairing a solid-color dress with big, chunky, colorful jewelry like a bold pair of statement earrings or a statement necklace.  To add a touch of boho to the look, throw on some hair jewelry, either in the form of a chain headpiece or a jeweled headband.

IMG_2174

To make your look more casual, try wearing a basic casual shirt over the dress.  You’ll still get the appeal of the tight body-forming skirt without having the entire skin-tight dress showing.

Top: Forever 21

Next, it’s time to spice up the look with a colorful moto jacket.  I paired the navy dress with a 3.1 Philip Lim zip up jacket.  Leave it unzipped for a more casual, informal look.

 IMG_2251 IMG_2253 IMG_2238

To make the outfit a touch more glamorous, I added a Swarovski necklace.  Keep the jewelry simple when wearing a bold jacket so that you don’t have too many pieces fighting for all the attention.

Last but not least, I wore a pair of Jeffrey Campbell pointed toe stiletto pumps.  Because after all, Jeffrey Campbell can make every outfit a bit more special…

So have fun with bodycon styles this Spring.  Make them casual, make them fancy, make them sexy, or make them conservative…the choice is yours.

Forever 21 Fires Model for being Too Fat

Forever 21 fired this model for being too fat.  If I didn’t love how cheap their clothing is, I would tell Forever 21 to go fuck themselves.  But don’t get me wrong, I think skinny is sexy…and skinny definitely sells.  But skinny isn’t the only thing that’s desirable.  I think that anyone who has posed for Sports Illustrated, would suffice in selling cheap polyester to teens and tweens.

Skinny models make a statement to young impressionable women.  I’m not saying that it’s bad, I’m not saying that it’s good either, what I am saying is that no young woman would criticize a body like the one Chrissy Teigen (pictured above) shows off on Sports Illustrated.  If Forever 21 can’t make their clothes look appealing on a woman with perfectly sculpted curves, then their clothes aren’t worth the one dollar they pay to have them made in China.

Perhaps Teigen’s body appeals more to men than women, but when have women not valued having a body that appeals to men?

The point I’m trying to make is, there’s more than one direction a company can go.  I don’t think companies like Forever 21 should stop hiring stick thin models.  After all, clothes look good on the super thin.  But then again, clothes look good on Jennifer Lopez too and she’s got curves for days.  When did variety become such a bad thing?  There comes a point when I get sick of seeing models with no boobs or hips to hold up a dress.  When did cleavage go out of style?  Was the guy who decided to fire Teigen from modeling for Forever 21 gay?  Did he not see the beauty in every inch of this woman’s body?  Teigen could be wearing a garbage bag and she’d still turn heads.

I’m not going to stop shopping at Forever 21, I’m not going to stop thinking skinny is sexy, but I’m also not going to be a complete moron by thinking that having meat on your body can’t be sexy; Teigen clearly proves that it can.  So Forever 21, open your eyes and see that sexy isn’t just one size.
