How to Style a Dress to Flatter Your Body Type

red dress

Accessorize

When I first ordered this red dress online I thought that it was the most beautiful thing I had seen.  I was wondered it wouldn’t look good on me…red never does…but I bought it anyway because it looked good on the model and I hoped it would do me justice as well.

When I first put it on I stared in the mirror thinking I had just been swallowed up by a sea of red.  It hung past my knees (thanks to my height complex), it had tons of extra material that did absolutely nothing to show off the curves of my body, and it did absolutely nothing for my fair skin tone.

Months later, in another attempt to make this dress work, I tried it on again.  This time I paired it with a pink hat and silver hoop earrings.  I started to get a bit of a boho vibe, totally something that i strive for in my everyday wardrobe.

I snapped a few pics and watched my enthusiasm die as I starred at a short girl trying to pull off a tall girl’s dress.  Then I slipped on high heel boots.  Okay, I can fake my height a bit.

There’s nothing I can do about the fact that red is not my color, but I wanted it to be so I stuck with it.

Add Shape

Then I complained to my boyfriend that the dress was still drowning me.  He suggested I throw on a belt.  I couldn’t believe it but it helped!  It was like a whole new dress.  I had a shape, I had accessories to make it pop, I had heels to fix my height complex, and now I had a whole new look to wear to boozy brunches, wine touring, and classy affairs.

I wore this red dress look to a fashion event in the city and the cameras kept following me all night.  If I hadn’t of been wrapped up in finding a pair of Manolo Blahnik’s to add to my shoe collection, I might have loved it.

I brought out the beautiful red color of this dress by pairing it with a variety of pink and brown.  Last but not least, I wore my Gucci sunglasses to make the look even more chic.

Transition from Winter to Spring with Awesome Street Style

Spring Street Style Secrets

With warm weather hopefully just around the corner, I keep dreaming about my favorite Spring staples to pull out from the back of my closet.  It was a long winter wearing puffy jackets.  I’m ready for windbreakers, leather jackets, short skirts, and shorts!  At this time of year when the weather is still fairly unpredictable, (especially in some regions!) I like to wear layers.  Layering smart can help create some pretty chic street style.

I wore the above look to brunch and it was perfect.  I combined plaid and leather and sparkles, creating a look that was equal parts casual, edgy, and feminine.  This is the time to slowly transition from boots to sneakers…and then finally to sandals when the temperature starts rising!

I livened up my dark fall colors (i.e. black jacket and navy plaid shirt) by wearing fun Spring-y accessories like the bold pink handbag and sparkly pink sneakers.  Recently I’ve been obsessed with my extra large silver hoop earrings because they make every look a bit more boho.  I had more than enough excitement going on in this look so I kept my other jewelry minimal.

I wore this look out to brunch on the weekend.  When I don’t want to spend an hour getting ready, I take a few shortcuts.  I cut out hair prep time by doing my hair in a ponytail.  The big silver hoop earrings help make me look stylish without any added primping time.  I can jump out of bed and into the car in ten minutes or less with this look.

In the Spring, it’s easy to keep makeup minimal.  All you need is a freshly washed face a little mascara and a pink tint on your lips.

Here are six items to help you recreate this Spring Street Style look:

Why the Grammy’s are just a Political Throwdown Now

Ten years ago I watched the Grammy’s to see my favorite bands perform, dance in my room, and cheer on my favorite musical artists.  This year I find myself watching the show to see who makes the biggest political statement…and yeah okay the live musical performances are nice too.

Political statement number one came from an American singer I had never heard of before, Joy Villa.  She wore a dress with a fetus in a womb on it and a handbag that said pro-life.  Props to you for using fashion to give you publicity but lets all agree, that if you’re pro-trump in Hollywood then you’re setting yourself up for bad publicity.

For those who are still focused on the fashion.  The best way to stun your audience is with a neutral gown.  For those who don’t have the budget of a celebrity, here are a few that are elegant, stunning, and affordable.BCBG gown

How to Play Up your Favorite Neutrals

Saks Fifth Avenue pants

Take a closer look at my other posts and you’ll probably see that I’m a huge fan of bright colors! Pinks, blues, purples, are always a crowd pleaser.  However, experimenting with different looks is what keeps my days fun as a stylist. A couple weeks ago I had a wonderful get together to celebrate a friend’s birthday.  I wanted something comfy, something cozy, and something mature.

I played up my faux suede skinny pants with a pair of crystal cowboy boots.

On top I experimented with fur, a funky t-shirt, and a long necklace.  You don’t NEED color to create a stylish winter look.  When playing with neutrals, try experimenting with different textures in a look.  Here I have leather, suede, fur, and cotton knit.

Dressing for a Night Out Dancing with Friends

Ah the weekend comes and goes so quickly, and before you know it, it’s Wednesday.  This past weekend I finally got to put on my dancing shoes and rock some sexy moves on the dance floor.

I wore this brown beaded top that I got from a clothing swap party recently.  Although my boobs didn’t quite fill it out the way the original owner’s did, I say that there’s nothing a double-padded bra can’t fix.

Funny enough, after acquiring this top, I was watching an episode of Shameless from Season 1 and saw Veronica wearing the exact same top but in purple! You know you’re wearing something sexy if the sexy and promiscuous Veronica from Shameless is wearing the same top!  Leave it to me to notice this small detail.  After all, half the fun I get from watching TV shows comes from admiring and being inspired from the fashion.

Low-cut v-neck sleeveless shirts are my favorite for dressing up to go out on the weekends. Here are a few of my favs available to buy now:

Outfit of the Day

Today’s blog outfit is inspired by the brown and white polka dot dress that Julia Roberts wore in the movie, Pretty Woman. Remember that gorgeous silky dress Vivian wears as she’s stomping on divots at the horse race?  My dress is nowhere near as gorgeous as that one, but it still reminds me of it!

Screen Shot 2015-05-21 at 8.15.38 PM

I completed the look with a white cardigan, navy pair of Jeffrey Campbell shoes, a touch of red lipstick, and wavy hair that I created with my triple-barrel waver iron.

To make polka dots work for you, pair them with sophisticated separates and a seemingly effortless beauty regimen.  Keep your eye makeup simple and your jewelry classic and old-fashioned.  In Pretty Woman, Vivian transformed from a hooker into an elegant lady in a brown polka-dot dress.  Just wait and see how classy and elegant you’ll feel when you try one on!

Be a Style Icon in Bodycon

Dress: Forever 21

Dress: Forever 21

With the Spring approaching and warm weather on the rise, it’s time to do your legs some justice in bodycon silhouettes.  I experimented with my new navy bodycon dress from Forever 21, pairing it with different jewelry, different accessories, and colorful clothes.

Try pairing a solid-color dress with big, chunky, colorful jewelry like a bold pair of statement earrings or a statement necklace.  To add a touch of boho to the look, throw on some hair jewelry, either in the form of a chain headpiece or a jeweled headband.

To make your look more casual, try wearing a basic casual shirt over the dress.  You’ll still get the appeal of the tight body-forming skirt without having the entire skin-tight dress showing.

Next, it’s time to spice up the look with a colorful moto jacket.  I paired the navy dress with a 3.1 Philip Lim zip up jacket.  Leave it unzipped for a more casual, informal look.

To make the outfit a touch more glamorous, I added a Swarovski necklace.  Keep the jewelry simple when wearing a bold jacket so that you don’t have too many pieces fighting for all the attention.

Last but not least, I wore a pair of Jeffrey Campbell pointed toe stiletto pumps.  Because after all, Jeffrey Campbell can make every outfit a bit more special…

So have fun with bodycon styles this Spring.  Make them casual, make them fancy, make them sexy, or make them conservative…the choice is yours.

Today’s Hottest Finds

Created with the StyleChat App

Let’s be real, 90% of the fun of going out for the night, is dressing up.  So I scoured the web for the hottest dress and accessories to create a sizzling hot outfit.  Whether you’re impressing a guy, or impressing yourself, you can’t go wrong with a little black dress.  If you want that effortless look…that “I want to look sexy without looking like I’m trying to look sexy” then wear a dress with long sleeves.  Make it tight and body-forming with some fun sexy cutouts like the one from Nasty Gal featured above.

For jewelry, pick your favorite piece and go with it.  I chose a pair of drop silver earrings to match the silver chain in the Chanel bag.  Speaking of which, if that Chanel bag were, $6,000 cheaper I would buy it! (Actual retail price of the Chanel bag: $6,700.)  The pink color is an obvious winner!  When you’re wearing a black dress, you need at least one colorful accessory to give the look some flavor.

The shoes are from the brand, United Nude.  They’re a statement piece that will have everyone at the party talking.

Stay tuned for more hot looks coming this way and thanks for reading Molly’s Runway.

Nasty Gal’s Weekly Entertainment

I appreciate the attempt, but I’m a little confused Nasty Gal.

Fashion seems to be taking a weird turn lately.  We’ve got the men wearing no pants on the runways, and now women are classifying a dress as a bunch of pom-pom fluff balls being very not strategically pasted to ones body.

So here’s my question, would you ever wear this to a party?  I get weird looks sometimes when I dress up too much on the West Coast; I can’t even imagine what this dress would solicit. Perhaps a trip to the insane asylum?

Nasty Gal sure knows how to entertain us!  I’d love to hear your thoughts. $583.00! Those are some expensive fluff balls.  But who knows, perhaps I’ll be running out to the Michael’s store soon to buy myself some arts and craft pom-pom fluff balls (insert appropriate term here.)

Outfit of the Day

Created on the StyleChat App.

Today’s outfit of the day is inspired by the desire to mix warm and cold color tones for a soft and intriguing look.  Throw on your favorite pair of colored skinny jeans in a red/burgandy/maroon/pink color tone.  Pair it with a similarly colored purse.  In this example I use the beautiful Stella McCartney handbag to bring out the color of the jeans.  To compliment the maroon, the look features soft beige boots.

Last but not least I added a blue button-down blouse and a watch with a blue face, to add some cheerful color to the look.  Keep this look simple without jewelry, or dress it up with a fun pair of hoop earrings or chunky necklace.

I hope you like today’s look.

Stay tuned for more OOTD’s.
