Trying to navigate hookup culture, crop tops, and spandex pants has been tough enough…but now designer, Rick Owens has brought the definition of fashion to a whole new level by dressing his models in… people. Yes, people not only wear the clothing; now they are the clothing!
You know that figurative expression that people say, “she looked like sex walking” well…I think this takes that expression to the next level.
My question is, is this better or worse than portraying women as sex objects? Now we’re portraying women as materials…clothing…dresses…shirts…lifeless coverings. Don’t get me wrong, I think Rick Owen’s idea is tremendously clever. The runways represent a space where talented, creative people can break down borders and expand our limits of creativity and expression by experimenting with the meaning of style itself. Controversy is a healthy part of how we grow and develop and expand our definitions of what’s acceptable. That’s why the clothing we wear changes so dramatically almost every decade.
Let’s take a vote:
Who finds this offensive? Who finds this ingenious? Who finds this weird but cool? Who finds this creative? Who finds this slightly disturbing? Who finds this innovative and futuristic? Who finds this oddly empowering?
…Who finds this all of the above?
