Get the “I’m Gunna Kick Some Butt” Look

The “I’m gunna kick some butt” look is one of my all time favorites.  It is manufactured by the inner need to express yourself despite the consequences.  It is an important part of that empowering feeling when you learn to embrace your fashion favorites, and ignore the rules set before you.

The “I’m gunna kick some butt” look can come in many different forms, but there are a few vital characteristics that it often possesses:

a) Stand out jewelry.  Arming yourself with glitzy rings is a great way to start.

b) Something weird.  Wearing something weird like a pair of jeans with paint splatter says something about your willingness to accept yourself for who you are.  It not only shows your quirky side, it also shows your confidence to wear what ever pleases you.

c) Leather.  A kick butt outfit isn’t complete without some article of clothing that is made from leather.  Your best option is probably a biker jacket, a leather miniskirt, or tight leather pants. Each one shows that you mean business!

d) Something metallic.  Metallic items help you stand out.  In any “kick butt” outfit it’s always good not to shy away from the spotlight!

e) High heels.  This is a no-brainer.  High heels help a woman’s posture; they distinguish us from the opposite sex; and while not yet scientifically proven, they make us more efficient and productive because it’s pretty hard to have a bad day when your favorite shoes are lifting you up…literally.

f) And of course, it must include something sparkly like a sequined handbag because after all, sparkles are the most empowering part of any adult outfit.

Summer Date Outfit Idea Based on the Psychology of Colors

I recently went to a wear all-white party and it reminded me how much fun it can be to dress in pure, soft tones, whether it’s all white or even soft feminine hues like pink or cream.  Many studies will show that color has a real affect on our moods.  Pink for example, is normally connected to love and romance, being that it is a softer shade of red.  Other words often attributed with pink are softness, kindness, femininity, and apparently compassion as well.

I just learned however, that pink is also usually thought to provide a calming effect.  Maybe that’s why it’s the perfect color to wear on a date? You’ll not only calm yourself, but command peacefulness all around you? Hopefully? Maybe?

The one downside of pink, is it’s common attribution to childness.  When someone says pink, an image of a young girl in a pink dress with pigtails and pink bows may come to mind, but this is a wildly one-sided view.  Pink can be very sophisticated and mature.  It’s all about how you use it. Check out the outfit featured above.  Light pink skinny jeans are a lovely way to add a touch of soft color to a sophisticated yet casual look.  When paired with cream and gold, maybe even some rose gold, you’ll end up with nothing less than perfection.

White has many obvious implications.  For example, wedding dresses represent purity and innocence, but there are many other meanings associated with white.  White can be a new beginning, a fresh start, and even simplicity.  The color white is often used to make rooms seem larger.  White backgrounds are used to enhance appearances in pictures.

If simplicity, softness, and kindness are all qualities that sound pleasing to you, perhaps it’s time to see what effects you gain from incorporating some pink and white into your wardrobe.

One Simple Reason to give your Skinny Jeans a Rest

Work with me ladies.  I know that skinny jeans are one of the most beloved women’s fashion item, and I know that they do wonders for a woman’s curves and make our behinds look exquisite, but they are not the only option.  Take a look at what you’re missing if you limit yourself to skinny jeans.

311229_2288135768152_1564243_nSay hello to flare jeans, your long lost friend! This style will emphasize your lovely thighs and make your legs look deliciously long!  Here’s a cool trick you’ll love: keep your jeans a few inches too long and wear them with high heels.  When your flare jeans are just an inch off the ground and they hide your high heels, it will give the impression that your legs are much longer!

Flared jeans will hug you in all the right places! Get ones that are fitted through the butt and thighs, and then pick your desired level of flare!  From slightly flared to hellooooo bohemian goddess, you can’t go wrong! Try a pair of super faded flare jeans and watch how much leaner your legs will look!

So when is the best time to pull out your flared jeans?  The answer is…anytime! Whether you’re heading to the bar, a park, a friend’s house, a date, a concert, a festival, you can rock your look with a touch of flare!  Go casual with a basic tee, dress up with a silky top and jewels, go grunge with a plaid shirt, or go bohemian by pairing your flare jeans with a floral crop top!  Flare jeans can open up a whole new world for you if you just open your mind to them!

My favorite stores to find the best flared jeans are Farfetch, Free People, and Nasty Gal!  Check ’em out, your legs will thank you!

One Sweater, Three Looks for Different Occasions

You may not want to work overtime, but your sweaters do! One simple sweater can take you from work to happy hour drinks to hanging out with friends on the weekend.

Look #1: Wear to Work

Wearing a bold color like blue will not only help you seem more confident and in-charge, it will also help you break up the boring grey-ness of a typical office.

Look # 2: Casual Weekend Chic

My favorite part of this look is the camisole.  Even if the sweater covers it all up, there’s something to be said for feeling good about what’s underneath.  Others may not be able to see it, but you can feel it, so opt for a nice silky camisole.  FullSizeRender[2]

Look #3: Classy Night Out

The thigh-high boots in this look are what turn up the sex-appeal.  Sure, the sweater and dress are pretty conservative and understated, but those boots will add the perfect balance! FullSizeRender[1]

OOTD: Casual and Glam

Screen Shot 2015-09-27 at 9.15.41 PM

While I’m not normally into graphic tees, this one was too true to ignore.  Wearing high heel pumps with a pair of light-wash skinny jeans will make your look glamorous and chic, while still comfortable.  If you’re a true girly-girl you know that sparkling, bedazzled jewelry can be hard to ignore.  Wearing a pair of crystal studded earrings and a crystal arm cuff is the perfect way to make a grungy tee more feminine and chic.

Nasty Gal

Nasty Gal’s Memorial Day sale lets us take 40% off selected styles.  I’m always afraid when I see “selected styles” because usually that means the worst reject styles that nobody wants anyways, but this time, Nasty Gal has given us a selection of 1,400 different styles to choose from in this sale! Woo!

Here’s a pair of cropped and ripped black skinny jeans.  For a limited time take 40% off $118.00.

How To Keep White Shoes Clean

Haha, the title’s an oxymoron.  You can’t!

But here’s why you shouldn’t care.  This season white is everywhere.  From tops, to pants, to dresses, and down to your shoes, the color of purity is key.

Shoes will inevitably get dirty or scuffed-up the more you wear them, and yes these marks are easier to see on white fabric, but white shoes have their time and place.  These Giuseppe Zanotti’s would look devilishly good with a pair of white skinny jeans to wear to the bar.

Giuseppe Zanotti at Yoox ($538.00)

Giuseppe Zanotti at Yoox ($538.00)

Add a little sense of lightness to your look with these feather Jeffrey Campbell shoes.

Jeffrey Campbell at Nasty Gal ($160.00)

If you’re dressing up for the evening, add a little bit of sparkle with these rhinestone peep-toe pumps from Nordstrom.

Nordstrom ($129.95)

White shoes will look great paired with a pair of white jeans, a summer flare dress, or even something as casual as blue jean overalls.  Avoid puddles and dirt if possible, but other than that, it’s time to give your white shoes some street time.

J. Molly

Get the Best Look for Coachella

As we all know, it’s festival season.  Coachella is this weekend.  Tonight you’re probably scouring your closet wondering what the hell you’re going to wear.  You’ll be outdoors, you’ll have minimal prepping time, you’ll be jamming out to your favorite tunes, you’ll be hot crammed in between thousands of people, so what should you wear to stand out?

Start with the basics.  Consider the stores with a boho, rocker “I want to rebel slightly” vibe: Urban Outfitters, Brandy Melville, and Free People.

White skinny jeans are great in theory.  They’re hot, sexy, a little feminine chic country, but they can also get dirty…Urban Outfitters is offering a pair of white skinny jeans on sale for $39.00.  I’d say jump on that like a fat kid on a Smartie if white is your thing.

If you’re more into the dark neutrals, you’re in luck because Urban Outfitters is offering a pair of black skinny jeans for $39.00.

Pair them with high heel black booties, a ripped grey or white t-shirt, a black leather body harness, and you’ll be the one that they should hire to be on stage at Coachella!  I’d say visit Nasty Gal for their black leather body harness…but I just bought one of their last ones in their hottest (and cheapest yet not cheap) style…oops.  I couldn’t resist.

Next we have Brandy Melville.  Yes, you may have to arm wrestle a bunch of pre-teens to get your favorite styles, but if one size fits all is your size, then Brandy Melville could have the perfect wardrobe pieces for you.

Rock the concert in a grey mini cotton/viscose dress from Brandy Melville.  Make it a bit more slammin’ with a chunky necklace, a pair of black country booties, and some wickedly straight, shiny hair.

Last but not least, let the people be free in Free People.

This sleeveless roll neck slouchy shirt will look great paired with jeans, a skirt, or over a pair of overalls.  Throw on a long gold necklace overtop.  If you’re wondering where to go for that, check out indie designer, Vanessa Mooney.

Looking for something a bit slouchy on the bottom?  Go boyfriend, go army green, go three-quartered length, go slightly off-kilter.

Last but not least, you need to stand out in the crowd in some way.  A jazzy ring could work, a bracelet is good too, but how about a ring and bracelet combo? Check out Nasty Gal for hot hand piece jewelry that could have you feeling totally rocker-chic.

Perhaps you’re one of those lucky ones going to Coachella this weekend, perhaps you’re just planning a hot weekend filled with a Shark Tank marathon; don’t worry, it’s all good.  These items can take you from Coachella audience, to lounging around your house in style, or chilling in your favorite bar.

Have a great weekend.

Outfit of the Day

Created on the StyleChat App.

Today’s outfit of the day is inspired by the desire to mix warm and cold color tones for a soft and intriguing look.  Throw on your favorite pair of colored skinny jeans in a red/burgandy/maroon/pink color tone.  Pair it with a similarly colored purse.  In this example I use the beautiful Stella McCartney handbag to bring out the color of the jeans.  To compliment the maroon, the look features soft beige boots.

Last but not least I added a blue button-down blouse and a watch with a blue face, to add some cheerful color to the look.  Keep this look simple without jewelry, or dress it up with a fun pair of hoop earrings or chunky necklace.

I hope you like today’s look.

Stay tuned for more OOTD’s.
