The Statement Piece Every Wardrobe Needs

We may not all want to wear bold patterned dresses all the time, but no wardrobe is ever complete without at least one wild dress you thought would be unflattering until you tried it on.  Vertically challenged individuals like myself, probably already know that patterns aren’t easy to pull off when you’re not 5 foot 9.  One key piece of fashion advice I learned from a young age, is that solid colors make you look taller, and crazy patterns can make you look shorter.

The shorter the dress, the more it will emphasize the length of your legs!  Pick a dress that has the same pattern from top to bottom.  Know which colors flatter your skin tone, and stick to them!

This Fall’s #1 Statement Piece in Every Color!

img_6482On any given year, the Fall is when we can look forward to cool jackets, chic sweaters, and ankle booties!  But this Fall, all my attention has been diverted to leather jackets in a variety of colors!

pink-1

My favorite purchase this fall is this light pink vegan leather jacket from Zara.  I stood in the store for about 45 minutes trying to decide between the light blue or the light pink one.  In the end, my signature color won, and I’m happy it did!

Colored leather jackets are the perfect statement piece to wear with any of your Fall basics like a white tee and black skinny pants.

Just when I thought my leather jacket quota was reached, I fell in love with this hot pink leather jacket, which you can buy here: Neiman Marcus

One of the best qualities of a leather moto jacket is that grungy, edgy vibe! Since light pink and hot pink doesn’t really scream “wild and edgy” I needed to incorporate another color into my leather jacket collection!  This metallic silver/pewter jacket is my go-to when I want to kick up my “bad girl” vibe! 😉

Incorporating Color into your Everyday Wardrobe

Don’t let the grey skies of winter drain the color from your wardrobe.  A splash of color here and there, a fun pattern, or a burst of sequins may be the perfect thing to brighten up your outfit! But how much craziness is too much?

The golden rule: When there is too much going on, everything loses it’s value a little bit.

My favorite way to plan an outfit is by picking one statement piece and planning a clear and decisive look around it.  If you want to wear a bold deep green skirt, keep your shirt a neutral color, and pair soft and simple colors around it.  You want the green skirt to be the center of attention, so don’t let any other part of the outfit steal the show.

If you want to wear a plaid shirt, pair it with a pair of skinny jeans and rugged black or brown cowboy booties.  Since there’s already a lot of pattern going on with the shirt, leave your neck bare with no jewelry and add a simple pair of earrings.

If you want to rock your new electric blue blazer, pair it with a neutral-colored tank and a neutral-colored pair of pants.  Adding a silver or gold chunky necklace will compliment the blazer perfectly.

If you want to wear a pair of pants with a crazy pattern, don’t introduce any other new colors into the max.  For example, the colors in the pants below are accentuated in the outfit with the purple handbag, the grey shirt, and the rose pink and black pumps. Make the pants stand out by keeping the other elements simple.
