How to Make a Fancy Black Dress Suitable for a Week Night

black dress

I have so many fancy dresses hanging in my closet and not enough “dazzling dress” events to attend. Sometimes I manipulate a piece to make it work for me, and not the other way around! While some may still think that sequins for holiday parties and that’s it, I vehemently disagree.  I like to think that, “If it sparkles, it’ll make you smile” so why not make sequins a regular part of your wardrobe? Dress them down with these three simple style tips:

1. Wear a Ponytail

Ponytails are great for job interviews, working out, and…dressing down a fancy dress. Nothing says “I’m so chill” more than a ponytail. On one hand it shows everyone that you’re confident enough to go a day without styling your hair down and on the other it says that you can rock anything because you’ve got gorgeous features.

2. Add a Touch of boho

Larger than life silver hoop earrings are the perfect glamorous boho element to add to an evening look. They show that you’re not afraid to have fun, in fact, you’re probably the life of the party.

3. Add Bright Color

Adding bright color accessories to a little black dress makes its seem less “dressy” and more “stylish.” Being bold is different than being fancy. Hot pink or electric blue will turn heads, drawing attention to your outfit as a whole without singling out your oh-so-divine sparkly dress.

4 Unexpected Trending Colors for Spring

Spring is officially two weeks away! Naturally the best part about the changing seasons is the warmer weather approaching.  New seasons also bring a new color palette.

1. Pink

At the oscars we saw a couple stars wearing hot pink dresses. With the transition from winter to Spring we normally see a natural transition from bold hues to soft pastels, but this Spring looks like we’ll have our choice of fresh new bold hues that are still so fresh and feminine.

With this look I combined my oversized Nasty Gal sweater with my double brushed purple Lula Roe tights. For an evening out I threw on the jeweled headband to make the look a touch more whimsical and indie.

2. Red

That’s right, red is no longer just a holiday-inspired/Valentine’s Day Go-To. Your little red dress or coat can take you from winter to Spring and keep you totally in style.

3. Blue

I fell in love with Diane von Furstenberg at a young age.  There’s no wonder why; this DVF blue patterned dress is totally on trend for Spring and completely affordable.

4. Yellow

It’s not normally my favorite color, but when I see it wrapped up with pink in these adorable lemon sandals (that instantly make me crave a picnic!), I think that yellow can definitely be a great color to accent your wardrobe.

Three Ways to Wear Summer Grunge

My summer style is often defined by whatever’s easiest to throw on and cover up as little of my body as possible.  Crop tops, off-the-shoulder tops, and cut-out tops make any look a bit grungier.

While I wouldn’t call myself a huge baseball fan, baseball caps are my summer go-to when I’m trying to hide from the sun.  If you’re like me and not one of those lucky people who tan well, baseball caps should be the base point of any look you create.

Wearing jewelry in the summer is great because it’s less likely to be hidden behind your long sleeve tops and sweaters.  Short shorts are never a bad idea on the weekends.  Jean shorts are one of the most versatile summer items you could own.  For an extra grungy look, find a pair with rips and roughly cut edges.

Get the Modern Version of Julia Robert’s Look from Pretty Woman

Twenty-seven years later and the fashion in Pretty Woman is still relevant.  That movie made an impact on us in more ways than one, including it’s fashion.

We were first captivated by Julia Roberts on screen when we saw her in this sexy white and blue cut-out dress.  What was sexy then, is still a trend now!  Cut-out dresses can be found at any store selling trendy items in 2017.  Shop the white and blue dress from ASOS here.

Don’t forget her incredible stripper boots! These boots definitely made an impression on me, and since then I’ve always been searching for the perfect pair.  To be honest, my perfect pair of thigh high patent boots would be hot pink, but you definitely can’t go wrong with these classic black ones.

During the day, she covers up her “lady of the night” look with a tie-up white blouse which you can shop here.

Her transformation from a Hollywood Blvd lady to a Rodeo Dr classy lady is mesmerizing.  Shop the white dress here.

Of course we all remember the red dress she wore in the evening.  Who knew the off-the-shoulder style would be one of the biggest trends of 2017!  You can shop this red gown here.

And ta-daaa, you’re 2017’s modern Pretty Woman.

Three Fashion Staples for a Successful Night Out

As my closet contents continue to grow, I sometimes find myself getting lost in a sea of frilly tops, black dresses, sparkly jewelry, and backless tops.  Having options is great, but there are three fashion staples that can make putting together an evening look quick and simple, and best of all, successful.

  1. My basic black cotton bodycon dress from Forever 21 is my go-to dress when I want to start with a classic and sexy base before bedazzling up my look.  It’s great for layering, and unlike many of my other dresses, it’s long enough to keep my backside covered while dancing all hours of the night!

2. This trendy sheer peach off-the-shoulder top may not stay off the shoulder as much as I’d like it, but it’s still my go-to when I’m trying to add a feminine chic touch to any look!

3. Lastly, silver hoop earrings, especially the obnoxiously large ones that I’m wearing, are a great way to spice up any going out look without being weighed down in pounds of rhinestones or chunky jewelry.  I got these lightweight hoop earrings from Bloomingdales.

If you’re perceptive, you may have picked up on something on my teeth in these pictures.  I like to use white strips before going out.  They help keep my teeth freshly white and sparkly so I can smile until my heart’s content and counteract the evil stains of red wine.  For reference, I use 3D Crest Whitestrips LUXE Professional Effects, and I find they do a great job!

This is what your Little Black Dress Needs!

IMG_2266

Many of you can probably see that I definitely like my little black dresses. I blog about them all the time, and I’m constantly upgrading to the new and exciting styles. Everyone knows you can’t go wrong with a little black dress. But when you’re heading to a party or a bar and you don’t know exactly how fancy/casual it is, there can be a sense of hesitation about wearing a black dress. Will it be too fancy? Will everyone be in jeans?…BUT I really want to wear a black dress! If you’ve ever faced this situation (I know I have!), here’s how you can solve it!

Little black dress says, “fancy.”

A plaid button-down shirt says, “ultra casual, this is my boyfriend’s shirt that I just threw on.”

So, combine the two (wear the plaid shirt un-buttoned over the black dress) and you’ve got “I’m a lady that likes dressing up, but tonight I just want to be chill, comfy, and effortlessly sexy” a.k.a you’ve got perfection!

I apologize for making my outfits talk, but if you think of each outfit as it’s own personality, it’s really rather effective and fun!

Improve your Workout Look with 3 Simple Steps

IMG_3229

Working out is way more fun when you’re looking good doing it.  That being said, trust me there are many days when I don’t care what top or shorts I’m wearing, I just want to sweat it out!  Other days, I want to feel good AND look good!

My three go-to tips:

  1. Straighten your hair before putting it into a pony tail.  A straight, silky line of hair swooshing around looks way better than the “I just woke up and this is how my bed-head looks in a ponytail” kind of look.
  2. Bootie shorts.  Enough said.
  3. Fitted top with a cool neckline.  Normally, I’m a t-shirt gal all the way.  An exercise top with an old tee thrown overtop and I’m ready to go!  But if you want to brighten up your look just a bit, pick a more stylish sleeveless top!

And there you go queen of the treadmill or master of the hills, your workout just got a lot more stylish!

Style Tips for your 4th of July Outfit

Created with the StyleChat App

Created with the StyleChat App

If you want to wear a Fourth of July outfit with all three colors, red, white, and blue (without looking cheesy) let your accessories help!  Pick two colors to wear the clothing part of the outfit.  A white midi skirt will make you look summery, while a red top will help make your outfit bold.  Try matching your sunglasses to your top for an extra splash of boldness.  Depending on the weather or where you’ll be going, keep your shoes comfy and cute.

Use your accessories to add the final color into your look.  Here I have chosen a blue Tory Burch bag and blue earrings.

In total you have a look with two items of white (skirt and shoes), two items of red (top and sunglasses), and two items of blue (purse and earrings).

Now that you’ve got the perfect celebratory look…it’s time to celebrate!

Here’s hoping that your Fourth of July is filled with fireworks, friends, food, fun…and drinks!

What to Wear on Canada Day

It’s Canada Day! Some of you may be headed to a Canada Day party and thinking to yourself, what should I wear? You could be a walking stereotype and wear red and white…or you could diverge out onto your own path.  Or you may be thinking, I live in America…the celebration isn’t for another four days.  But whether you’re Canadian or not, there’s no reason why you can’t celebrate.

So here’s your guide to celebrating in style.  Before choosing your shirt/pants/dress, choose the alcohol of your choice.  Now that the most important decision is out of the way, let’s get down to styling tips.  If you’re going to be standing outside watching fireworks, it’s best to cover up so you don’t get eaten alive by mosquitos.  Throw on a pair of your favorite medium wash jeans (skinny or flair…either will work) just make sure they are not too long for you (#shortgirlproblems) because chances are you could be standing on grass or dirt while watching the fireworks.

Second, choose your top.  Cleavage is great…unless you’re a guy…showing man boobs is definitely not a good idea.  Just remember to bring a sweater because Summer weather isn’t always predictable at night.

Next, it’s time to pick your shoes wisely.  Wearing a pair of skinny heels may not be the best idea if you’re walking on grass because you’ll either be sinking into the grass every step you take, or walking on your tippy toes.  Then again, if want to keep your look stylish, heels are the way to go.  Try a pair of wedges because they will let you walk smoothly across any kind of surface…(even a table surface…depending on how crazy your celebration gets!)

Keep the wine flowing, the firecrackers cracking, and the s’mores roasting, and you’ll be in for a good night!

Wishing all of you the very best Canada Day!

J. Molly

Make your Look Monochrome

I get an email this morning; it’s a Nasty Gal newsletter that informs me that holiday sparkle is out and monochrome is in.  If you’ve seen the Gilmore Girls episode that gawks over the power of Marie Claire to forbid the wearing of jean jackets, this moment was very similar.  I don’t know whether it’s the rebel in me or not, but there will definitely be more wearing of sparkles…some things just never go out…they’re called classics.

Nonetheless, I thank Nasty Gal for making monochrome sexier than ever.  Whether you want a pair of pants, shoes, dress, or top, Nasty Gal makes dressing monochrome easy and fun!

Sporty and sexy from head to toe.  Rock this outfit down the street, to the gym, to the mall, or to a party.  Pair it with a bright colored handbag to keep the look interesting.

Black and white = bold and beautiful!

Black and white stripes in close proximity may bother your eyes, but there’s no denying this dress is sexy.  Zip it up or down depending on the occasion.

Let the snow outside your window be the best inspiration for your monochrome outfit.  Blend in with white, or stand out with black.  Either way, stick to monochrome for a sophisticated and fun look this winter season.
