The Must-Have Fashion Item of the Summer

No, the must have fashion item of the summer is NOT a pink motorcycle.  I however felt the need to pose with this one because it made my inner spirit animal truly happy.  Once again, this is proof that dreams really do come true when you’re walking the streets of San Francisco.

The must have fashion item of this summer is – drum roll please – the white miniskirt!  It may not be the most practical item in your closet but it is your most show-stopping piece for summer and I’ll tell you why!

1 – It goes with everything

Wear it with your favorite bold color top like hot pink or bright blue.

2 – You can achieve a “sophisticated sexy” look with a monochromatic outfit

Wear it with a black top and keep things simple and classic.

3 – White skirts show off your confidence

White skirts aren’t the most forgiving item in your closet.  Black is often considered the edgier color, like when you wear a black leather jacket. But to be honest, only true badasses can pull off white!

4 – White screams “SUMMER VACAY”

No beach vacation is complete without some white attire.  White skirts work great as bathing suit coverups.

One last piece of advice: be sure to find a white skirt that isn’t see-through! That’s half the battle. Opt for thicker fabrics, or ones that have linings.

Love,
Molly

Natural Ways to Comfort a Hangover and Hide it in Style

For some of us who may have made too much liberal use of the Sunday bottomless mimosa brunch concept, Monday mornings can be an even bigger hassle than usual.

Here are a few natural ways you can comfort your suffering, hungover self:

  1. Sip on some peppermint tea

2. Add some ginger

3. Get a Vitamin C boost with Orange Juice

4. Opt for foods high in potassium like bananas, avocados, potatoes, and spinach

5. Drink tons of water

If none of that works, your next option for curing your hangover is “pretending” your hangover is cured.  How do we pretend?  We dress to impress, instead of dressing the way we feel!  Adding some color to your look will distract from the darkness you feel inside.  Big circular shades are not only super trendy, but also super convenient to hide dark circles under your eyes.

The Statement Piece Every Wardrobe Needs

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-12-10-32-pm

We may not all want to wear bold patterned dresses all the time, but no wardrobe is ever complete without at least one wild dress you thought would be unflattering until you tried it on.  Vertically challenged individuals like myself, probably already know that patterns aren’t easy to pull off when you’re not 5 foot 9.  One key piece of fashion advice I learned from a young age, is that solid colors make you look taller, and crazy patterns can make you look shorter.

The shorter the dress, the more it will emphasize the length of your legs!  Pick a dress that has the same pattern from top to bottom.  Know which colors flatter your skin tone, and stick to them!

Inspiring Fashion Quotes to Warm every Fashionista’s Soul

IMG_1298
‘Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world.’ – Marilyn Monroe
I don’t know about you, but the success of my day is very much so dependent on the shoes I’m wearing! Let’s dig a little a deeper into why.  High heels help your posture; having good posture makes you look confident.  Looking confident makes you feel confident.  Feeling confident lets you conquer the world.  See the progression?

‘Elegance is the only beauty that never fades.’ – Audrey Hepburn
There are times I make my style edgy, there are times I want to be bohemian, there are times I want that wild grunge style, and then there are those nights I go for elegance.  These are the best nights.

IMG_2555
‘One is never over-dressed or underdressed with a Little Black Dress.’ – Karl Lagerfeld
Enough said.
IMG_0032

‘In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.’ – Coco Chanel
What I like to say along the same line is, “If you ever doubt your uniqueness, you’re failing to see your beauty.” – Me
Being different is fun, embrace it!

IMG_1277

‘I’m just trying to change the world, one sequin at a time.’ – Lady Gaga
This is one of my favorites.  My belief in the power of sequins never usually went past its power to hold my attention and bring a smile to my face.  But the way Lady Gaga puts it, makes embracing the sequin, a lot more meaningful, and I love it!
‘Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.’ – Rachel Zoe
This was actually my go-to reason for why I loved fashion so much growing up!  Spoken words sometimes fail me, but that’s okay because the style I project can be much more powerful.  It’s similar to that common saying, “actions speak louder than words.”  I think style is an action we all take, with every choice we make saying at least something about our personalities, mood, or motivations.
‘Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.’ – Orson Welles
The most important part of this quotation is the “…not giving a damn.”  We all hope to create a style that’s attractive and puts us in a positive light, but at the end of the day, you can’t please everyone, and the only person you should care about pleasing when it comes to your personal style, is yourself!  Not giving a damn, is crucial!
‘To me, clothing is a form of self-expression – there are hints about who you are in what you wear.’ – Marc Jacobs
Self-expression is one of those topics that is close to my heart.  The best kinds of self-expression come in many different forms.  Self-expression through style, writing, dancing, skating, and how you treat others, are just a few examples of how we can express who we are by how we act and carry ourselves.
 IMG_1368
‘I can’t concentrate in flats.’ – Victoria Beckham
Who can? Seriously. I revert back to my statement about posture.  Once you have that great posture, and extra touch of height, and you’re feeling like a million bucks because you look like it, then it’s time to get down to business!  Leave the flats at home my friend.
‘Men tell me that I’ve saved their marriages. It costs them a fortune in shoes, but it’s cheaper than a divorce’ – Manolo Blahnik.
Hahaha.

‘Girls do not dress for boys. They dress for themselves and, of course, each other. If girls dressed for boys they’d just walk around naked at all times.’ – Betsey Johnson
Thank you! I’m glad someone finally said this. Whether I dress conservatively or wear something revealing, ultimately I’m wearing it for me. If others like it, great. If they don’t, who cares? Dress for yourself.

Visiting Coit Tower

The summer is great for many reasons, including our transition from the rich colors of winter to the softer more feminine pastels for summer.  When I’m planning an outfit, I like to base it around the dress.  Choose your pastel color dress of choice then add your summer accessories: your white hats, your white sandals, your silver jewelry, and big and bold shades.

Hot Boho Chic Style for Summer in a Few Fast and Simple Steps

Screen Shot 2016-06-05 at 11.36.26 AM

It’s another sunny day in June.  When I want to cut back on the time it takes for me to get ready in the morning and leave my place, I follow a few simple steps.

First: I slip on a comfy, boho chic dress.  This summer my go-to would be a lacy, off-the-shoulder dress.

Second: I grab two pieces of the chunky jewelry displayed across my dresser.  Either all silver or all gold.  For a boho chic look I usually go with silver.

Third: I choose the sandals that slip on and off easily.

Fourth: Add mascara and lip balm and nothing else.

Fifth: I scrunch up my hair with Marc Anthony’s Dream Waves Beach Spray for perfect beachy wavy hair.

Sixth: Grab my Ray Bans.

Ta-da! I’m ready for another hot summer day!

Wear that Dress you like, Skintight…

Yes, you guessed it…The title is part of the lyrics to a Selena Gomez song. Which one? Good for You, that song with a sexy video of Selena rolling around on the couch and the floor.

I know I spend a lot of time talking about dresses, but that’s because I love them and they’re a major staple in my wardrobe.  This dress is one of my favs.  I bought it about five years ago from Mango.  The splash of red is what really makes this dress unique!

I love how the dress hugs my body without constraining it.  And when you’re going out in the winter, it doesn’t hurt to have long sleeves!  It’s perfect for a date night, dinner, party, bar, etc.

Fresh Funky and Chunky: Statement Necklaces

My best friend gave me this necklace! I love wearing it with bold colors like navy or black!  The light blue and orange beads add the perfect amount of color to my ensemble!

When to Wear your Short-Sleeve Coat

Growing up on the East Coast, I never really understood the concept of a short-sleeve coat. If it’s cold enough to be wearing a coat, then why would you want your arms uncovered? Then I moved to the West Coast and it all made sense.  On those warm rainy days when you want a coat for protection, even though it’s not that cold out, it’s time to pull out the stylish short-sleeve jacket of questionable utility.

edited for blog

These puffed shoulders take me back to the 80’s ever so slightly.  I wore this coat over a maroon short-sleeve dress that I ordered from Tobi not too long ago.

coatshortsleeve

So what’s the key to pulling off a short-sleeve coat?  1. Don’t wear long sleeves under it.  That trend was around ever so briefly in the early 2000’s but thankfully it’s gone.  And 2. Wear one that accentuates the short-sleeve in some way, whether it’s a puffed shoulder or a capped sleeve.  After all, you chose to buy this very ineffectual piece of outerwear, you might as well make the style count.

If you have an extra $508 dollars to spare, I have the perfect dress for you.  This green sequined dress from Nasty Gal, is one of their new arrivals and it’s already nearly sold out.  Just imagine walking into your holiday party wearing that dress with the structured shoulders, and the plunging neckline.  While it’s bold enough on it’s own and doesn’t need any accessories, adding a cool pair of chunky drop-down gemstone earrings with your hair pulled back, would make you the talk of the party!

Stay stylish and relaxed in a pair of your favorite ripped jeans.  Forget the tiny rips, go for an awesome retro pair that leaves your entire knees exposed.  Keep the heat up a notch with a pair of bold high heels.

After you throw on your favorite tee, all you’ll need are the final touches.  We’re all hoping for a sunny weekend so make sure to stay protected in an oversized bold pair of sunglasses.  You’ll be unstoppable in a pair of Chanel’s or Tom Fords!

Fall Trends: The Suede Patchwork Skirt

FullSizeRender copy 3

Created with the StyleChat app

Today’s look is inspired by the rich fall colors and luxurious materials dominating store shelves.  Zara’s featuring a bold patchwork skirt with our favorite fall colors, burgundy, navy, beige, and black.  Since the look features some bold pieces, i.e. the shoes and the skirt, I kept the jewelry simple, subtle, and silver.  While you don’t have to, I matched the handbag to the shoes because we want all the attention drawn to the skirt, not the bag.  Take advantage of our nice fall weather by wearing the look without a jacket.  The cold weather will be upon us before we know!

Hot Spring Trend Alert: The Midi

This spring you’ll have to find a different way to show off your legs because we’re all going more conservative in professional and sophisticated knee-length dresses.  Whether you’re going on a date, going to a party, going ou for brunch, going wine touring in Napa, or going to work, there are midi dresses for each of these occasions.

Created with the StyleChat App.

Created with the StyleChat App.

For more casual events try a midi that has some sort of pattern like stripes or florals, and goes into a soft, flared skirt.  If you want to wear one to work, opt for one that hugs the body without being too tight or too flared, and has 3-quarter length or long sleeves.  If you’ve got a brunch or day-trip to Napa planned, wear a midi in a soft neutral or pastel color like beige, violet, light pink, light blue, etcetera.  Opt for one that has some structural details like a visible zipper, collar, or belted waist.

Want to get a little more bold? Gucci’s Spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection featured this bright orange midi.

Got a party on the agenda? You could go fiery hot in a bold red or orange midi, or go for a sizzling slinky blue or teal body-con bandage dress.

For a classy and sexy evening look, you’ll be a knockout in a black midi that has sheer mesh sleeves, hot cutouts, and a low-cut back.

What’s your favorite midi style?!

Be a Style Icon in Bodycon

Dress: Forever 21

Dress: Forever 21

With the Spring approaching and warm weather on the rise, it’s time to do your legs some justice in bodycon silhouettes.  I experimented with my new navy bodycon dress from Forever 21, pairing it with different jewelry, different accessories, and colorful clothes.

Try pairing a solid-color dress with big, chunky, colorful jewelry like a bold pair of statement earrings or a statement necklace.  To add a touch of boho to the look, throw on some hair jewelry, either in the form of a chain headpiece or a jeweled headband.

IMG_2174

To make your look more casual, try wearing a basic casual shirt over the dress.  You’ll still get the appeal of the tight body-forming skirt without having the entire skin-tight dress showing.

IMG_2213

Top: Forever 21

Next, it’s time to spice up the look with a colorful moto jacket.  I paired the navy dress with a 3.1 Philip Lim zip up jacket.  Leave it unzipped for a more casual, informal look.

 IMG_2251 IMG_2253 IMG_2238

To make the outfit a touch more glamorous, I added a Swarovski necklace.  Keep the jewelry simple when wearing a bold jacket so that you don’t have too many pieces fighting for all the attention.

Last but not least, I wore a pair of Jeffrey Campbell pointed toe stiletto pumps.  Because after all, Jeffrey Campbell can make every outfit a bit more special…

IMG_2248

So have fun with bodycon styles this Spring.  Make them casual, make them fancy, make them sexy, or make them conservative…the choice is yours.

Today’s Hottest Finds

Created with the StyleChat App

Created with the StyleChat App

Let’s be real, 90% of the fun of going out for the night, is dressing up.  So I scoured the web for the hottest dress and accessories to create a sizzling hot outfit.  Whether you’re impressing a guy, or impressing yourself, you can’t go wrong with a little black dress.  If you want that effortless look…that “I want to look sexy without looking like I’m trying to look sexy” then wear a dress with long sleeves.  Make it tight and body-forming with some fun sexy cutouts like the one from Nasty Gal featured above.

For jewelry, pick your favorite piece and go with it.  I chose a pair of drop silver earrings to match the silver chain in the Chanel bag.  Speaking of which, if that Chanel bag were, $6,000 cheaper I would buy it! (Actual retail price of the Chanel bag: $6,700.)  The pink color is an obvious winner!  When you’re wearing a black dress, you need at least one colorful accessory to give the look some flavor.

The shoes are from the brand, United Nude.  They’re a statement piece that will have everyone at the party talking.

Stay tuned for more hot looks coming this way and thanks for reading Molly’s Runway.
