How to Style a Dress to Flatter Your Body Type

Accessorize

When I first ordered this red dress online I thought that it was the most beautiful thing I had seen.  I was wondered it wouldn’t look good on me…red never does…but I bought it anyway because it looked good on the model and I hoped it would do me justice as well.

When I first put it on I stared in the mirror thinking I had just been swallowed up by a sea of red.  It hung past my knees (thanks to my height complex), it had tons of extra material that did absolutely nothing to show off the curves of my body, and it did absolutely nothing for my fair skin tone.

Months later, in another attempt to make this dress work, I tried it on again.  This time I paired it with a pink hat and silver hoop earrings.  I started to get a bit of a boho vibe, totally something that i strive for in my everyday wardrobe.

I snapped a few pics and watched my enthusiasm die as I starred at a short girl trying to pull off a tall girl’s dress.  Then I slipped on high heel boots.  Okay, I can fake my height a bit.

There’s nothing I can do about the fact that red is not my color, but I wanted it to be so I stuck with it.

Add Shape

Then I complained to my boyfriend that the dress was still drowning me.  He suggested I throw on a belt.  I couldn’t believe it but it helped!  It was like a whole new dress.  I had a shape, I had accessories to make it pop, I had heels to fix my height complex, and now I had a whole new look to wear to boozy brunches, wine touring, and classy affairs.

I wore this red dress look to a fashion event in the city and the cameras kept following me all night.  If I hadn’t of been wrapped up in finding a pair of Manolo Blahnik’s to add to my shoe collection, I might have loved it.

I brought out the beautiful red color of this dress by pairing it with a variety of pink and brown.  Last but not least, I wore my Gucci sunglasses to make the look even more chic.

Three Winter Red Dresses Perfect for a Night Out

Express red dress

I spent many years avoiding red dresses believing that they didn’t flatter my skin tone and my auburn hair. It wasn’t until this season when I saw hundreds of red dresses that I just couldn’t resist. I loved this red dress from Express because it was elegant, sexy, and understated yet stylish. Midi dresses give you the comfort and sophistication you don’t get with mini dresses. The shoulder cut-outs make this dress perfect for date nights out on the town.

Although the Express dress is no longer for sale, here are a few others that are sexy, stylish, elegant, feminine, and totally chic.

The Unexpected Coat you Need to Stand out This Winter

Everyone wears a black coat.  Whether it’s black down, black wool, or black leather, most of the population blend into the abyss with this solemn color.  For those who want to have one jacket that will go with everything so that they can wear it all winter, neutral colors are great, but it doesn’t have to be black.  Grey, beige, and white give you lighter and brighter ways to enhance your style without losing the convenience of a color that matches everything.

How to Play Up your Favorite Neutrals

Saks Fifth Avenue pants

Take a closer look at my other posts and you’ll probably see that I’m a huge fan of bright colors! Pinks, blues, purples, are always a crowd pleaser.  However, experimenting with different looks is what keeps my days fun as a stylist. A couple weeks ago I had a wonderful get together to celebrate a friend’s birthday.  I wanted something comfy, something cozy, and something mature.

I played up my faux suede skinny pants with a pair of crystal cowboy boots.

On top I experimented with fur, a funky t-shirt, and a long necklace.  You don’t NEED color to create a stylish winter look.  When playing with neutrals, try experimenting with different textures in a look.  Here I have leather, suede, fur, and cotton knit.

The Dress Trend You Need this Fall

Sequins

Women’s Dresses

Womens Fashion

The only good thing about the impending winter season, is the influx of sequin dresses in store. Three things remain constant in my life:

  1. I’m always in search for a pair of high heels to take my breath away.
  2. Wearing pink is like breathing for me.
  3. Anything that sparkles can put a smile on my face.

How to Get the Perfect Date Night Look

Date nights are the best night of the week. They’re the perfect excuse to pull out your new fall attire, gather up your fave accessories, and enjoy a night of looking ultra-chic.

My go-to style tip: combine casual with fancy for a wildly fantastic ensemble.

Here I combined my new fave Tobi skirt, with a fall suede crop top with fancy sneakers, a trendy leather cap from Go Jane and that sexy pout. I wore Clinique pink lipstick that is just the perfect combination of smooth matte and creamy.

With my hair blowing in the wind, I had to keep it nicely tucked behind my ears. I love having long hair, but those curls can get unruly in the wind!

The best thing about warm weather in the fall is wearing those crop tops with an open back. I’ll take advantage of summer attire for as long as possible. This navy and white skirt from Tobi matched perfectly with my Brandy Melville crop top. Unfortunately, they aren’t still selling this exact crop top, but here is a very similar one!

Pink Sweater

Ever wonder which pair of shoes to wear? As a woman who owns almost a hundred pairs of shoes, deciding which ones to wear is what takes up all my time getting ready.

This fall I’m obsessed with girly sweaters. This soft, light pink sweater from Tobi is so comfy, making it perfect for a stay-in date night or a date night on the town. There’s plenty of time to wear dark colors in the winter. While the sun is still shining and the weather is warm, I like to stick with light, feminine colors.

My Chanel sunglasses are the perfect accessory to make any casual look, a tad more sophisticated! No look is complete without the perfect bag. For day time dates with my man I like to wear a big purse to carry anything and everything I might need.

Tobi Sweaters

Before heading out to a romantic dinner spot, I switch the big bag for an evening clutch. This black suede Jimmy Choo clutch is my favorite new accessory! It looks great with anything! I can dress it down with this ultra-chic orchid Tobi sweater, or I can dress it up with a little black dress on the weekends.

The jeans are from Armani Exchange. They look great with bold sweaters. When wearing a sweater that has a color that pops, I like to combine it with neutral accessories: brown Chanel sunglasses, grey skinny jeans, a black bag, and black high heels!

Once you’ve bought the perfect look, all you need is a couple savory tapas and that pink martini to really make the night exciting!

Molly

The #1 Thing People Say you Can’t Wear after Labor Day – But, you Totally Can

White – There’s a great myth that fall time means dark colors, rich hues, and heavier fabrics.  Living on the West Coast taught me that obeying seasonal fashion rules is as extinct as listening to CD’s.  Some people say that white shirts are always acceptable, but white bottoms are not.  I spent many years packing away my white jeans and white skirts every September, and then pulling them back out again every May.

The best way to make a white outfit fit for Fall is to add Fall accessories like a pair of high heel booties or a knitted beanie.

The only fashion guide you should follow is the weather.  If it’s warm and sunny, wear sandals and tanks, if it’s cool and cloudy wear sweaters and booties. There are no go-to seasonal rules to follow anymore, the fashion game is a lot less judgmental.

Get the “I’m Gunna Kick Some Butt” Look

The “I’m gunna kick some butt” look is one of my all time favorites.  It is manufactured by the inner need to express yourself despite the consequences.  It is an important part of that empowering feeling when you learn to embrace your fashion favorites, and ignore the rules set before you.

The “I’m gunna kick some butt” look can come in many different forms, but there are a few vital characteristics that it often possesses:

a) Stand out jewelry.  Arming yourself with glitzy rings is a great way to start.

b) Something weird.  Wearing something weird like a pair of jeans with paint splatter says something about your willingness to accept yourself for who you are.  It not only shows your quirky side, it also shows your confidence to wear what ever pleases you.

c) Leather.  A kick butt outfit isn’t complete without some article of clothing that is made from leather.  Your best option is probably a biker jacket, a leather miniskirt, or tight leather pants. Each one shows that you mean business!

d) Something metallic.  Metallic items help you stand out.  In any “kick butt” outfit it’s always good not to shy away from the spotlight!

e) High heels.  This is a no-brainer.  High heels help a woman’s posture; they distinguish us from the opposite sex; and while not yet scientifically proven, they make us more efficient and productive because it’s pretty hard to have a bad day when your favorite shoes are lifting you up…literally.

f) And of course, it must include something sparkly like a sequined handbag because after all, sparkles are the most empowering part of any adult outfit.
