Get the “I’m Gunna Kick Some Butt” Look

The “I’m gunna kick some butt” look is one of my all time favorites.  It is manufactured by the inner need to express yourself despite the consequences.  It is an important part of that empowering feeling when you learn to embrace your fashion favorites, and ignore the rules set before you.

The “I’m gunna kick some butt” look can come in many different forms, but there are a few vital characteristics that it often possesses:

a) Stand out jewelry.  Arming yourself with glitzy rings is a great way to start.

b) Something weird.  Wearing something weird like a pair of jeans with paint splatter says something about your willingness to accept yourself for who you are.  It not only shows your quirky side, it also shows your confidence to wear what ever pleases you.

c) Leather.  A kick butt outfit isn’t complete without some article of clothing that is made from leather.  Your best option is probably a biker jacket, a leather miniskirt, or tight leather pants. Each one shows that you mean business!

d) Something metallic.  Metallic items help you stand out.  In any “kick butt” outfit it’s always good not to shy away from the spotlight!

e) High heels.  This is a no-brainer.  High heels help a woman’s posture; they distinguish us from the opposite sex; and while not yet scientifically proven, they make us more efficient and productive because it’s pretty hard to have a bad day when your favorite shoes are lifting you up…literally.

f) And of course, it must include something sparkly like a sequined handbag because after all, sparkles are the most empowering part of any adult outfit.

This “kick butt” outfit can be found at Zara.

Spring Trends: Stripe Yourself

This Spring, it’s not just florals taking over, stores are filling their racks with striped clothing from dresses, to shirts, to pants, and more.

Next we have a V-neck navy and white striped dress from Zara.

Having a more casual day? Throw on your favorite pair of jean shorts or pants and pair them with this Forever 21 striped casual top.

For the best results, pair your stripes with solid colors.  Add bursts of color to your outfit with colorful accessories.  A pink handbag could take your navy and white striped dress or top to the next level!

If you can’t find the striped item of your choice in stores, search your mom’s closet. Every woman over the age of 50 is bound to have an Ann Taylor or Liz Claiborne striped top.  It’s pretty much inevitable.  But if the tag says, “Talbots,” run! Wash your hands, do your mom a favor and throw it out, then keep searching.

How to Make your Dresses More Versatile

For yesterday’s look I took a pink dress from Zara and made it more casual by wearing a long button-up sweater dress from Forever 21.  I threw on my black cowboy booties but something was still missing, so I added a blue and white plaid scarf.  Not pictured here is my beaded navy headband that I wore as well.  To get the look you want, you need a splash of color (pink dress), a casual element to make the look effortless (the sweater dress), a show stopper accessory (the scarf), and a touch of sparkle (the headband).  Last but not least I turned to my trusty ruffed up leather messenger bag from Club Monaco so I could card around my laptop in style.

The next dress I’m wearing is an off-the-shoulder blue striped cotton dress from Forever 21.  This dress can be worn with jewelry to dress it up, or with nothing to keep it effortless and sexy for a casual day strolling the streets.  I love this one because I can go from naked to ready to go out in less than one second by throwing on this casual and comfy dress and nothing else.

Dressing with Neutrals: How to Turn Drab into Fab

Created with the StyleChat App

As woman with very fair skin, I understand that it’s risky wearing neutral skin-toned colors because they can easily wash someone out.  But this season we’re seeing neutrals bloom into a very sophisticated, classy statement, and so it’s time to give neutrals another go.  Here are some tips for how to wear neutrals without letting them make you look drab.

Start with a soft, boho style beige dress.  This on it’s own may do nothing for you, but it’s the accessories that you pair it with, that will turn the look around.  Pinks go very well with neutral beige, so add a touch of soft femininity to the look by wearing a tie-dyed pink summery straw hat.

Add some richness to the look by adding a dark beige tote.  If you’re going to do beige, do it up right by combining different shades of beige in one look.  The gold choker necklace in the picture above is the perfect piece to add to a neutral outfit because it’ll be sure to turn your effortless look into a statement.

What’s the number one way to add a touch of classic sophistication to an outfit?  Add pearls, of course! Try pearl stud earrings to wear during the day, or drop pearl earrings to wear out at night.

Last but not least, add a touch of color by wearing a pair of pastel blue flat slide-on sandals like the ones featured above.  Even neutral looks need a touch of color to keep them interesting.

Where can you find these hot neutrals?
